Counter color with painted cabinets.
Mixture of chairs, streamlined mirror....what unifies the look is the creamy yellow color.
Use of gray paint with dark wood is soothing; Using fabric chair back covers would add a contemporary feel.
There is great appeal to whit washing or painting the chairs which gives this room a more contemporary feel.
They've positioned the table at an unexpected angle. Nice touch.
Wall color to update the green paint in the kitchen and the accent wall.
Like everything....simple design.

Simplify window coverings by using plantation shutters and only a valance (shutters not shown here). Table Idea #1: Turn oval dining room table the long way and 1) build a window seat (could be portable instead of built in) and also 2) could be (church pew or love seat along the long side). Table Idea #2: If a large table is no longer needed, use the round table from kitchen in the dining room area, as shown.
Draperies are more loose, not as traditional as existing; Use a jute area rug over carpet to add a contemporary feel; Could use fabric chair back covers (to cover the wooden backs on the dining room chairs);
Neutral walls with geometric drapes; Contemporary mirror and lamp; Chair rail, an option? for breaking up the wall expanse from the vaulted ceilings in the home;
