Surrounded by walls of glass, the living room offers views of the surrounding oak, hickory, maple and beech trees. Natural materials such as the knotty cedar ceiling, shou sugi ban wall cladding, slate flooring and black steel fireplace surround provide a backdrop for pieces like the midcentury-inspired sofas, a sculptural wing chair and moss green tufted ottoman. Subtle black metal tube lights, suspended from the ceiling, provide uplighting via an LED strip.
In a hallway between the staircase and family room, the architects designed niches for four stylish bunk beds, tricked out with modern ladders and draperies for privacy. Along with a queen-size Murphy bed in a corner of the family room, the home can accommodate 10 people. The three levels give the homeowners and their guests privacy.
The master bedroom's vaulted ceiling is clad in a white washed cedar, the white walls are the perfect pallet for the bright colored accent pillows and fresh tropical greenery. The sliding glass doors lead out to the upstairs lanai overlooking the ocean and a well placed orange swing bed sways in the breeze under the outdoor fan, shaded from the afternoon sun by Bahama shutters

The Ehrlichs keep a telescope in the area marked “Gallery” in the top center of this plan. The night sky in the remote location is free of light pollution, which makes for remarkable stargazing.
The Ehrlichs regarded the woods as an important part of the house. “We wanted it to be very porous between inside and out,” Ev says. On the lower level, walls of windows and glass doors provide views of the lake. There isn’t a TV in the main family room and dining space. The entertainment here comes from watching nature, playing games, reading books and having conversations. The space includes a large stone fireplace. The double doors to the right lead to the stone staircase and hot tub.
The front of the house is simple and rustic. “Ev and Nancy were very interested in craft,” Ballard says. In addition to local inspiration, the architect was inspired by the way Japanese architecture blends with nature. The Ehrlichs are very energy-conscious and were concerned about sustainability. “This house would meet Passive House standards if it was tested,” Ballard says. It has a geothermal heating system, a superior insulated block wall system, triple-paned windows that are operable and arranged for maximizing cross breezes, and an energy-recovery ventilator. The architect used sustainably harvested and recycled materials as well as low-energy fixtures. And he built the home to last. “Building a durable home is also an important aspect of sustainability,” Ballard says. “The proper structure, wiring and plumbing were all done very well, so they will take less energy to maintain.” Ballard + Mensua Architecture On the facade, Ballard kept elements such as lighting, windows and the door simple. The stone is a multicolored cleft Pennsylvania flagstone and the siding is sustainably harvested Western red cedar. “I like little color pops,” Ballard says. Red accents around some of t...
Outdoor dining room: A solid oak pergola planted with wisteria vines encloses the outdoor dining room, providing light shade for the eating area and a structural feature for the backyard. As the vines mature, they will eventually blanket the pergola in lush foliage and fragrant springtime blooms. “The oak pergola was a very bold statement,” Fox says. “We wanted to make a real wow feature, while at the same time framing views out to the wider garden.” The pergola measures 17⅖ feet (5.3 meters) long, 16⅖ feet (5 meters) wide and 7⅕ feet (2.2 meters) tall, providing ample room for a table to seat six to eight people on the Jura Beige limestone patio or host a larger party with cocktail tables. The solid oak beams sit in metal sleeves that act as a protection against water damage and as a contemporary architectural feature of the design.

Lake House This is one of the more unusual houses that Secret Design Studio has been engaged to design. The setting is spectacular and steep, with land that drops away to the south, down to a picturesque lake, with walking trails around the lake. The clients are a busy professional couple who live and work in Melbourne's inner city, and who need a weekend retreat, that can also be used for short term holiday rental, and be a possible future retirement home. With no children and a high demand for two couples requiring good quality short term holiday rental it was decided to make both bedrooms suitable for king size beds, each with their own bathrooms. The clients share our love for Frank Lloyd Wright, so the form and the materials selected pay homage to him, but with an Australian angle. Apart from the steep slope, there was the problem of orientation, with the best views to the south, and the front of the house facing north. The solution was to have two parallel wings, with the eastern wing being open plan living and kitchen, which steps down to the south deck. The western wing contains two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and laundry/mudroom. Both wings were connected by a north/south c...

he large soaking tub also has expansive views of the forest. Attention to subtle details keeps the bathroom feeling open and stylish — the 12-by-24-inch tiles with minimal grout lines in a matching color create a smooth and cohesive look. And even the grab bar is well integrated with its dark finish that matches the oil-rubbed bronze faucets and black window frames.
nother large set of doors opens the kitchen up to the outdoor grilling area, which includes a large pizza oven fashioned from a salvaged steel buoy. The countertops in the indoor and outdoor kitchens are Absolute Black granite. The snow fencing continues along the cabinetry wall, while exposed trusses and a large steel vent hood add industrial flavor. The quieter countertop and subtle cabinet paint colors let the wood elements in the room take center stage.
The reading nook contains a twin-size mattress for an extra overnight guest, and features built-in storage and reading lights. Just past the nook, the black door handle is the only clue that there’s a door in the wall of reclaimed snow fencing. It opens to a closet that houses the extra dining chairs.
The inset metal pieces represent a compass that points to locations significant to the family. Case’s Profile chairs are Danish modern in style. Fung also chose them because they’re stackable. “They fit even more chairs around the table than you see in these photos, so they wanted to be able to store the extras efficiently,” he says.
the compressed entry to a long, open space that opens up completely to the views down the great lawn to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The beams are Douglas fir. Several of them were milled from trees on the property that were taken down during construction. “The landscape is stunning and the climate is temperate, so a connection between indoors and outdoors was really important,” Donovan says. “Large windows and doors opening to the landscape allow for a flow of light, air and activity all year round.” These lift-slide doors are each 8 feet wide, creating a 16-foot-wide opening to the terrace. The doors were made by Quantum Windows and Doors in Everett, Washington. The walls along the steps are covered in reclaimed snow fencing, which has a weathered driftwood look that relates to the surrounding landscape. It was also chosen for its durability. “With all of the people that go through here, the inevitable scuffs and scratches will only add to its appeal,” Fung says. The dark-stained end-grain wood flooring is also very durable. End-grain flooring is composed of blocks cross-cut from timber ends, and it was often used in industrial buildings and even as street paving because it can ...
Wood, stone and steel play big roles in the home. “There are a lot of kids and bikes and toys that come through, so durability was a priority throughout the house,” Fung says. “We made sure this high-traffic area was durable by using stone on the floor and indoor-outdoor fabrics on the bench.” The built-in bench is made for putting on shoes and boots and the area also serves as a message station. The wall behind it is crafted of magnetic ferrous steel. “We imagined this as a place to hang maps, messages and ‘cool things to do on the island today’ guides,” Fung says. The wood on this ceiling is stained clear vertical-grain cedar with a square lap edge. The lower entry ceiling gives the space a more compressed feel, making the way the house terraces down and opens up to the water a dramatic experience. Once past the compressed area, a chandelier made of reclaimed vintage glass marine floats and netting adds a burst of green and draws the eye up to the ceiling on the second floor. “The chandelier is nautical and of the place,” Fung says. The second level’s ceiling is stained select veneer Douglas fir panels from Roseburg. “This material looks like large sheets of plywood, but the s...

would this work well to give windows to multiple rooms with seating oriented to a larger fireplace?? Easily 2 large sofas and 2 large chairs.... the large sofa opposite the fireplace would have the large drop down dining table behind it with 2-3 dining chairs- additional chairs might come from bedrooms and ..... dining table set up behind the sofa would take advantage of the windows and fireplace views - location of kitchen and hearth room?
