To know what size of light fixture to get, add the length and width of the room. That is the diameter of the light fixture to get. For example, a room 10 feet by 8 feet calls for an 18 inch diameter light fixture.
Use lighting on the ceiling so that the tall ceiling isn't just a dark void at night.
Use very large scale art, that can be seen from across the room, to increase coziness in a tall room.
Consider some wood tones on the wall (that match the flooring) to break up a large expanse of wall. Place it horizontally for a more modern look.
Use interesting sculpture to bring down a large ceiling (tarpin scales?).

Consider a farm house sink for the island as it sits forward so you have more space behind the taps (you don't need the three inches between the sink and the edge of the counter as you would for the front of standard undermount sink).
Sink on peninsula or island wall, frig and stove on the other wall. If I can't move the sink, just have a flat top to the peninsula.
Use a galley kitchen without the upper cabinets on the sea side.
A galley kitchen for PR house.
