Sounds good! The spiky blue plant is a low mounding Grass plant. It gets about 12" tall and wide. It comes in a "Carex" or a "Festuca ....either would be great in that spot. I like the idea of surrounding the path in that area with the clumps of those grasses. They have to have lots of water however. The roots on the trees will take the first water and whatever is left is all the grass can get. So, if we do those, they have to have a ton of water to get established but then they would be drought tolerant. YES THE ROOTS WILL BE A CHALLENGE, BUT I'M HOPING WE COULD FIND A SOMEWHAT FLATTER AREA TO PLACE THE CHAIRS. I LIKE THIS SPIKY PLANT THATS LINING THIS PATH. WHAT IS THAT?I saw the stones you have stacked up to use. This would be a great way to incorporate those. I also see how the roots are sticking up in the yard where I think we should put the sitting area. Depending on how you feel about possibly uneven stones on which to set your chair, we could do just the decomposed granite there edged in stone, and this as the path up to the sitting area and across to the porch through the flowerbed. (The firepit seating area you designed is a great design that can be reproduced...
This ground cover is about 3" high I'm with you on the snakes... I avoid clumpy grasses for that specific reason! LOVE THIS! I'M ALWAYS LEARY OF SNAKES IN GROUND COVER IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD THO :) path idea. This is ajuga ground cover that blooms blue in spring and is a good filler for stone set on ground directly.
bush asters for fall color by street?
Abelia "Edward Goucher" This is an either/or for the abelia spot I'm recommending. I'd also like to see this on the right side of house under yaupons in front of gas meter next to house.
Abelia radiance. Stays 2-3' tall at maturity. clumps
Boxwood "Faulkner" likes shade. Would like to do as a low hedge in front of your porch behind the sunproof liriope
Fragrant Snowball viburnum a taller hedge like variety. Leaves turn purplish in fall. Would be great inside the right side gate.
blue fescue mounds against white wall
LIKE THIS! carex "blue" variety
blue fescue grass
Yes! They are pink THESE HAVE BLOOMS? wine and roses weigela
weigela sonic bloom
ostrich fern Gets 5' tall and 2' wide
Maui sunrise Elephant ear. We can also buy standard elephant ear bulbs to plant in back yard
It's about 8" high. I've never used it before, but it is recommended for shade. THIS LOOKS PRETTY! I'VE ONLY SEEN ENGLISH LAUREL AS A SHRUB I THINK THO. HOW TALL WOULD THIS GROUND COVER B? I'D LOVE TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT STAYS RELATIVELY LOW TO THE GROUND (AGAIN, SO WE CAN WATCH FOR THOSE PESKY SNAKES FROM THE RIVER!) Groundcover called English laurel for front yard
Do you like yews" I hesitate on their hardiness.....but they are great for shade. Plum yew spreading low growing
Yes! I love this one too. Possibly using one in the front on the right side porch in the really shady spot next to the bench. LOVE!!! Instead of the dogwood, I think I might love this plant! Eastern Snowball virburnum. It has sweet leaves....unlike the japanese variety and blooms white turning to green.
Spirea anthony waterer
Big Bang Spirea. Not evergreen ut cool new growth as pictured to the right and is able to handle extrmeme heat, dryness and cold. Plus both sun and shade.
New Growth on big bang spirea. Candy corn
I'm going to keep looking for this spot to give you a choice. I'm not 100 percent sold on the heat tolerant nature of this plant. I know it can take cold but I wonder about heat......OK I LIKE THAT IDEA A LOT. The leaves do fall off in winter. The main emphasis is this shrub/tree will absorb tons of water. It's picked as a BOG PLANT. So it does well where water collects. It is cold hardy but the heat part is iffy. Do you have any breeze in your backyard in summer? or is it humind? DO THE LEAVES FALL OFF IN WINTER AND THEN THE TWIGS REMAIN? ARE THESE COLD & HEAT HARDY? leaves on arctic sun red twig dogwood These are all options for the rock creek area in back yard Any dogwood. These branches are either fire red or yellow in winter
Fernleaf Full-Moon Japanese Maple
I will most likely have to see what is at the nursery at this time. They have so many choices. I can snap a pic of the ones they have in stock when I go and you can give me a thumbs up! But, I will definitely have this one in mind! THIS IS TOUGH - I LOVE BOTH OF THEM! I THINK THE YELLOW/RED/ORANGE IF I HAD TO CHOOSE JUST BC I DON'T SEE THEM AS MUCH IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. I just saw this at Jackson Home and Garden in Dallas and its a first sighting for me. Would you like the green maple with yellow.red/orange fall color and do you envision at traditional red/burgundy leaves maple in front? LOVE LOVE!! Fall Color of Japanese Maple. It can get orange at times too!
OK I found these !! I have one if you'd like to try it! I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT! WOULD LOVE TO TRY! The original plan has beauty berry on it! I'd replace in backyard LOVE!! WHERE WOULD YOU SUGGEST PLANTING? AND ARE THESE COLD & HEAT HARDY? Pearl Glam Beauty Berry Berries are purple in fall....white flowers in spring. I am in hot pursuit for this plant!!!!
Hostas are fantastic in dry shade. They are perennials and will come back each year if the crown does not rot in the winter. I have a blue angel that has done amazing well. 4' wide Too much mulch can harbor slugs that eat the roots. The one caveat to hostas is to use slug bait. Its just a monthly dose but it makes all the difference I TRIED PLANTING HOSTAS IN THE FRONT FLOWER BED LAST YEAR BUT THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT. ARE HOSTAS AN ANNUAL PLANT? DO THEY NOT DO WELL IN THE WINTER? mix of ferns/hostas for front yard outside of dining room window
I Love this one too, I also work with Patriot Which has green/white margins and is a little more strappy but very hardy. THESE ARE REALLY NEAT! I'VE NEVER SEEN THOSE SHADE BEFORE. blue/white margin hosta
Blue Angel is my best performer at my house. I would recommend them. 12" long leaves. LOVE THESE! Hosta "Blue Angel"
Hydrangeas love the right spot. And I hope to find that for your house! It will be easier when your trees are leafed out and we can see where the sun hits. In general they like some sun. I found oakleaf hydranges and annabelles to be the most forgiving of direct sun. Dappled sun for all the rest. But I am willing to try because once the are established the heat is not an issue. They love cold weather -30 degrees. I LOVE ALL OF THESE HYDRANGEAS! THOSE LIME PUNCH AND TRUE BLUES ARE GORGEOUS. ALWAYS WANTED TO HAVE THESE, BUT THEY'VE NEVER SURVIVED WHEN I PLANT THEM (HAVEN'T TRIED AT THIS HOUSE). DO THEY LIKE SHADE OR FULL SUN? ARE THE HEAT AND COLD HARDY? snowqueen oakleaf hydrangea
endless summer hydrangea true blue color
annabelle hydrangea. Very hardy!
Little Lime punch hydrangea starts with white blooms turns to red/pink
annabelle hydrangea
This has a very cool leaf. They would do well in backyard. I'd have to pick a spot once we see the sun/shade situation. WHERE WOULD YOU SEE THESE WORKING WELL? I LOVE THE COLOR AND SHAPE! ARE THEY ALSO SHADE & HEAT TOLERANT? acanthus mollis bears breeches. shade
LOVE THIS! his is a hardy hibiscus which comes back every year. If we are picking just one for the boggy area I would recommend these. There are all different colors and sizes. We could alternate a few white and pink/hot pinks if we need more coverage. BEAUTIFUL! WOULD WE NEED TO REPLANT THESE EVERY YEAR? hardy hibiscus for back yard by rock stream
ligularia for shady wet area in back yard
Ok I like the idea of a showy grass but not sure we have the space for that much of it closer to the pool. I'LL BE WATCHING IN THAT BACK AREA FOR GETS MORE DIRECT SUN. I THINK THE AREA AROUND THE POOL GETS THE MOST AFTERNOON WEST SUN. This would be a narrower grass that is upright and stays green with the grass arching over. It needs full sun so it would need to be in a pocket of sun area if there is one. IS THIS FOR THE WET ROCKY AREA TOO? Miscanthus upright 5' tall
PRETTY!!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE NEED TO DO W/ THAT PERGULA. ALL OF THE OLD DEAD STUFF NEEDS TO BE TORN OFF, BUT I'M AFRAID OF ANYONE WERE TO GET UP THERE IT WOULD JUST COLLAPSE! Wisteria on pergola
GREAT IDEA! I thought this would work on the little trellis that is in the ground by the brick wall. behind the fire pit area. LOVE THIS! WOULD YOU SUGGEST THIS ALONG THE WALKWAY OR NEAR THE TREES W/ THE LIGHTS?clematis vine for trellis by fire pit shady/sun location
This is not an invasive vine. It grows by twirling its little vines around whatever it finds. It's cute?) It does not attach to anything. Just needs something to cling to. Let's definitely try on pergola. It's very hard to return if it freezes. I'D LOVE TO TRY! DO YOU THINK WE COULD TRY THIS ON THE PERGOLA? ARE VINES OK FOR TREES OR CAN THEY SUCK THE LIFE OUT OF THEM? :) This vine likes dappled sun, bright light. It is truly a favorite. It's only trouble is it grows 20' long but would cover any tree that needs a fun vine. OH MY! THIS IS SO UNIQUE! TELL ME WHAT THIS VINE LIKES! SUN/SHADE? love this Passion vine!
This is a specialty magnolia. It is not evergreen like the traditional magnolias. But has awesome spring blooms. There is also a Black Tulip magnolia as well. So, if we need a magnolia to take up some water, we can do this which has the nice spring blooms or go with a traditional magnolia with the large evergreen leaves. The only negative with the traditional magnolia is the size of the leaves you have to clean up. But either one would do great in that spot. IS THIS TYPE OF MAGNOLIA THAT HAS THE LARGE GREEN LEAVES?This could be planted in the back to absorb water as well. Magnolias love water! LOVE THE SHAPE OF THIS! WHERE WOULD YOU SUGGEST PLACING? magnolia stellata Royal Star Cool understory tree
LIKE THIS! Was thinking this would be a cool hedge by the fence that is across from the pool equipment? Inside the gate I walked in when I was there. The other option would be a Japanese Virburnum "Snowball" which turns into a tree. The white balls would be cool hanging over the fence when they bloom. Both will lose leaves in winter. BY THE A/C UNITS OR ACROSS FROM THEM? OR OUTSIDE OF THE GATE OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE WINDOW? eastern snowball viburnum Would look great inside your right side gate
Id like to do this one up by the front door. It would coordinate with the liriope you already have there. BY THE MAILBOX AREA? DOES IT DO WELL IN FULL SUN? abelia kaleidescope for front yard
I LIKE THIS. THESE HAVE DONE PRETTY WELL IN THE FLOWER BED FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. You have a great deal of these already there, so if you like them, I'd love to keep them and incorporate them into the design. We should thin the line out as they are now. I LIKE THESE! sunproof liriope
LOVE! Iceberg rose. True white color.
This is a annual bedding plant in Texas. It does very well just one in a pot. It has green undersides. It will do morning sun, afternoon shade. VERY PRETTY! SUCH A LOVELY COLOR! IS THIS LIKE A HOSTA OR MORE LIKE A VINE? WHAT TEMPS CAN IT TOLERATE? persian shield. great for pots in shade/sun Best in Fall
Angelonia comes in different shapes and sizes. This one here is a 3' tall plant. GREAT SUGGESTION!! NEED MORE OF THESE IDEAS, AS I ONLY KNOW ABOUT LANTANAS AS THE MOST SUN HARDY FOR MY POTS! Angelface White Angelonia. LOVES THE HEAT. Would be great by your pool or in a pot
