Garden
I like the idea of a seating area outside the windows, to make the indoors feel larger by borrowing (visual) space from outside. Interesting idea to have under-bench lighting. I don't necessarily think this mod-Asian vibe fits with a Cali-Mediterranean style (or farm/ranch style) of Ventura, but there are some interesting principles that might be transferable and useful for us
I love the color scheme and some of the ideas that this water feature exhibits - a natural rock-like basin, with smaller rocks inside to reduce water volume (if there were more rocks/shallower water, birds could wade), and a curved spigot pouring in. I wonder if the water splashing sound might be too harsh though? And the water depth is not shallow enough for birds to wade in.
curved pergola, allows for a shade cloth or canvas to be draped over it and/or vines to grow up over it
“The sound of flowing water is peaceful and it can cancel out other noise,” Gomme says. “It’s a great element to have in the [yard], particularly when combined with trees: The water reflects sunlight onto the underside of the trees and the tree canopies reflect the sound of the water back into the [landscape].” And, LED strip lighting is installed along the inside of the water features for illumination at night.
Idea for tiered retaining wall with built-in wall fountain
Nice fountain and interesting way the cobblestones are embedded in the pathway around it
I like the flagstone pavement and the sandstone borders; Local Pros
I like the stone steps; flagstone is nice too but I would prefer grout filling between the pieces. Local Pro.
Nice sandstone border for the vegetable beds, with very fine warm-colored pea gravel
From local pro Down to Earth Landscaping, this stuccoed wall seems to have undulation and movement with the hillside, plus space for seating on the lower level.
I like the stone wall with seating surface
An example of using kurapia as a lawn
I like that each step is a single stone (although the edges are a bit more rustic than I'd like)
Martha Picciotti's work with lovely wooden built-ins
Built-in seating with firepit is tucked into the retaining wall, something we could leverage with our hillside?
nice gate and pergola with flowering vine
planter and bench with removable wood slat seat as part of a tiered retaining wall
interesting idea for recirculating stream down hillside, though I do not like the types of rocks used
Cute idea for a toolshed (though it is a bit small for all our garden tools)
Idea for in-ground plunge pool or spa with water feature
Idea for in-ground plunge pool or spa with water feature
Clever use of space with espaliered fig trees
I like the combination of colors and textures in this frame - the sandstone step is lovely
I like the combination of sandstone, smooth stucco, trimmed boxwood mini-hedges, and leafy plants. This is also food for thought in how to add access/interest to the steep hillside on the side of our property
I like stone raised beds--here's an example, though the masonry style here is a little more rustic than I'd prefer
