Wood handrail or metal handrail? Wood is warm. In time, generally a long time, maintenance required. Metal is cold. Little if any maintenance. Neither is right or wrong. Which do you prefer visually?

Painted, square balusters are timeless. Very transitional style that can go modern or traditional depending on style of other components such as newel post, handrail, and base.
Again, horizontal look is clean, modern. Hazardous, however, for children.
Horizontal treatment nice, modern approach. If relevant, consider ladder look that encourages little ones to climb.
Mix of metal, wood and painted surfaces. Stair tread and floor tie in.
