Mumbai Houzz: A Contemporary Home With Vignette-Inspired Decor
Akari Studio creates little vignettes in this home by layering unique material palettes, textures and eclectic artwork
“The homeowners wanted a functional space that fit their individual needs and encompassed their love for entertainment with a splash of glamour. They also wanted the layout to make the most of the sea breeze and natural light,” says Niyoshi Sanghvi, founder and principal designer of Akari Studio.
A customised velvet upholstered sofa with metallic overlays, a patterned wingback armchair and a bench constitute the formal seating zone. A colourful rug anchors the whole arrangement. Marble flooring adds to the understated richness of the decor. The expansive windows let in the sea breeze and sunlight.

The formal living area opens into the dining room. Lined along the transition wall, a mirror console with spindle legs gets a touch of glamour with metallic inlays.
The wall behind the dining table showcases a painting by the lady of the house, who is a renowned artist. This multifunctional space has concealed storage which converts into a studio corner for her.

“The use of the mint dining chairs is a transition to tie in the bold colours and patterns of the formal living room,” says Sanghvi. “All the furniture in the house is custom-made, with our studio designing the pieces and coordinating their finish with local karigars and craftsmen.”

On the right side of the entrance is the casual living room with a muted grey L-shaped sofa and an ottoman for relaxed seating. The cabinet with mirrored shutters hosts a hidden bar.
Next to the dining room is a powder room with a moody design scheme. The carved wood frame mirror, faucets and hanging lights contrast with the deep charcoal hues of the wall tiles, cabinet and toilet.

A passage from the dining table leads to the bedrooms. “On the left side of the passageway is the master bedroom, with details in carpentry and upholstery,” Sanghvi says.
A wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe with sliding doors makes the most of the space in the bedroom. The reflective surface of the wardrobe injects a sense of luxe.

Layered vignettes on the dresser and a blue velvet upholstered chair punctuate the neutral palette of this spot with pops of colour.
In the master bathroom, the warm woody notes of the cabinet offset the dark-blue tones of the tiled walls.
“This was the dream room for the young boy and he helped us choose all the artwork and colours for this space. It features writable wall surfaces, pinned-up art and a little window reading nook,” says Sanghvi.

“No two materials, colours, or fabric choices are similar in the house. They are unapologetically vibrant and distinctive in style and materiality. I feel like this home successfully creates little vignettes and layered visual appeal,” Sanghvi says.
The main door opens into a vestibule that leads to the living room. This space is split into informal and formal seating areas. On the left side is the formal living space which, according to the designer, is the showstopper of the home. A wood-panelled wall serves as an attractive backdrop to hang artwork and creates a layered vignette.
