Todd Living room
fireplace is on the original wall, not built out. Bookshelves and cabinets flank the fireplace. Hearth is not built up as we are considering doing but it is tile inset into the wood flooring. Since you are doing a gas insert you do not need change the flooring or add a hearth at all. We are considering a hearth for visual balance, comfort and a potential low seat.
interesting details- registered toe kick, drawer at bench, paneling on wall at window. This isn't what we have but I couldn't resist saving it.

This is an example of too heavy and crowded design in my personal opinion.
cabinet to cover tv
the bench seats at windows and the wainscoat lines up with the mantle nicely
Symmetrical bench seats again at windows and wood fireplace surround looks like craftsman vintage replica.
TV over the fireplace in good proportion to the firebox. Wider surround in white wood with great stone/tile. small Bench seats at windows
Full wall fireplace surround with mantle and art frame above with wood work detail at top. Bookshelves with base cabinets. and TV on right.
traditional Arts and Crafts tile surround at fireplace with a wood mantle and bench for low storage of books. I don't recommend this example because is out of proportion but I wanted to include it for inspiration on what to do and what NOT to do.
This shows firebox, hearth, bookshelves and cabinets. It also uses stone, wood and white which I like.
This is interesting for inspiration- I'll be curious to hear your thoughts
I just had to add this for fun :-)
I like the proportion and scale - for inspiration of course. It's not what we have to work with- but the brick facade on the front is nice even if it were a stone I like the way it comes out from the wall and the mantle and Tv are nice and simple.
Here's the green slate surround that is so arts and crafts. White low built-ins with base low cabinets
stone, withe, wood, TV
aged wood mantle is more industrial look.
stone facade with light wood mantle
limestone stack stone facade with asymmetrical craftsman wood shelves. Very artistic style.
Craftsman wood panel above fireplace with Stickley style details
very simple wood surround with stone face and hearth. Freestanding bookshelves I think.
interesting room for inspiration. I'd like to hear what you like about and what you don't.
another picture of the artistic limestone facade

Cream flagstone look with recessed wood built-ins and a curved hearth
