Luxury takes on a zany avatar, with psychedelic colours, pop-art prints and retro decor, in this South Mumbai townhouse belonging to three brothers and their families.
“This house is located in the Peddar Road suburb of Mumbai, noted for its beautiful Gothic and neoclassical heritage buildings. The brief, therefore, was to counterbalance the surrounding landscape with colourful and bright spaces that reflect the personality of the young owners. I sought to shake up the traditional luxury stereotype with a high-impact interior, inspired by the Memphis movement,” says Jannat Vasi, founder and chief interior designer of her eponymous design firm, Jannat Vasi Interior Design.

The home is spread over four floors. While the ground floor houses the garage, the first floor hosts the first brother’s living spaces, where we tour the master bedroom, an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in closet. The second floor accommodates the home of the second brother’s family, where we see their family lounge, dining room, kitchen and bedrooms. On the third floor, we visit the den and the bedrooms of the third brother’s family.
The main door opens into a mirror-polished marble-clad passageway with a blue agate custom inlay.
“The colour scheme was inspired by Bauhaus’s trademark colour grid. The artwork, christened ‘My Heart is Aflutter’, is a characterful addition to the space,” Vasi says.

The passageway leads into a multifunctional garage that dons various avatars to suit the occasion. The room channels a retro vibe, by way of Pac-Man-inspired wall displays, dynamic seating, kaleidoscopic ceiling pipes and a neon sign that reads ‘Game Over’.
“It serves as a common living room for the entire family, a yoga oasis, a high-end techno gym and a games arcade,” says Vasi.

A golden mirror-finish cabinet stands at the back of the garage. “The cabinet is a showstopper and amps up the luxe appeal,” says Vasi.

Royal blue and deep timber tones define the first brother’s bedroom. The wall behind the bed wears rich narrow-ribbed wood panelling. It works as a headboard and a warming element in the cool bright palette that rules the room. The white marble floor reveals an inlaid patchwork of green Chianti marble, while polished floating nightstands flank the bed.

A royal-blue study alcove, characterised by alternate matte and glossy bands, sits to the left of the bed. A bijou white fold-out desk punctuates the deep-toned aesthetic.
A private lounge abuts the bedroom, ideal for winding down with a coffee in hand. The golden coffee table dials up the drama.
“I used linear geometry and colour blocking techniques to create a modern traditionalist look. The made-to-order bedding, wall panels, fabrics and chairs add mature shades to the overall tone of the room,” says Vasi.

“The Vanilla Noir playhouse cabinet is an iconic piece that really adds character to the bedroom,” says Vasi.

The first brother’s bedroom opens to a walk-in closet, continuing the bedroom’s palette with deep-blue walls and white floor and cabinetry, tied in by the circular rug in the same colours.

The first brother’s bathroom is a nod to the bedroom, with green Chianti marble squares accentuating the white marble floor. A sweeping Chianti marble vanity furthers the green palette, while being offset by the white wall backdrop.
“Thanks to a combination of vivid marble grains, white sanitaryware, and accessories in black and gold, the bathroom unfolds a timeless, sophisticated aura,” Vasi says.

On the second floor is the family lounge. An indigo feature wall backgrounds a multicoloured brushstroke-spangled sectional, accented in turn by a life-size scarlet cactus next to it. An embossed rug injects a textural quality into the polished aesthetic, while the bronze coffee table lends a quiet sheen. White marble covers the floor, mirroring the white veneer walls.
“The lounge surprises and delights like a special effects machine,” jests Vasi.

“I opted for bold, dramatic and modish furniture and artwork whose colour and richness would stand out against the white shell,” Vasi says.

A cantilevered dining table projects out of the unit, serving as a fluid structural extension. Chandeliers of graceful paper birds on gilded branches add a glamorous touch to the grey-and-white scheme.

The second brother’s bedroom is defined by a combination of quadrangle forms and classical sinuous elements. A shadow box wall mural, flanked by two-armed chandeliers, stands in for the headboard. The modern aesthetic gets an old-world spin, courtesy a nightstand with cabriole legs and a serpentine bench.

“The son’s bedroom features chromatic patterns and colour blocking reminiscent of the Memphis design movement. This design is a tribute to Ettore Sottsass’s Deco-meets-Pop style,” says Vasi. Bright geometric shapes, monochromatic stripes and angular blocks of colour cover the ceiling, while the walls are primarily white. Black stripes embellish both nightstands, with the design on the right extending upwards onto the walls and ceiling.
Cuboidal shelves flank the window, morphing leftward into a sleek floating study table.
“To balance the riot of colours, I chose white for the walls and blackboard facades for the wardrobe shutters,” Vasi says.

A bone-inlay cabinet underpins the window by the bed.
“The cabinet adds maturity to the otherwise playful Memphis-themed decor,” says Vasi.

The palette of the son’s bathroom is a hat-tip to that of the bedroom. The bright-blue vanity contrasts with the mustard-yellow wall. A Winnie the Pooh print adds a pop of childhood cheer to the aesthetic.

In the baby’s nursery, a vivid abstract wallpaper highlights one wall, providing a backdrop for the seating area. A sheepskin chair, cloud-shaped pendants and an embossed cool-mint rug conjure a gentle, tactile quality.
“The nursery provides visual tranquility; a feeling akin to sitting on a cloud,” says Vasi.

The nursery’s ensuite bathroom wears a sheen of grey marble across its floor, walls and vanity. A butter-yellow sink adds a restrained splash of colour.
The den, located on the third floor, is steeped in a white-and-orange palette. The television unit, composed of a staggered network of shadow boxes, curves off the wall, providing a base for the glass-topped dining table. Eye-popping dining chairs fringe the table on either side.
“I derived the concept from the visual of stacked packaging boxes. The design is dynamic with no spatial limits, despite an orderly linear composition. The den serves as a relaxing sanctuary for the family,” Vasi says.

Bright colours meet bold patterns in the third brother’s bedroom. A hand-painted, dry-brush-finish wall mural takes centre stage in the white cocoon. Acropolis-inspired furniture foregrounds the window to the right.

Red, white and blue dominate the teenage son’s bedroom, whose football-themed decor nods to its dweller’s love of the sport. A wallpaper behind the bed provides the illusion of a 3D goal post, while mask-shaped pendants hang over either side of the bed.
A sable study corner with open shelving stands opposite the bed.

Vibrant pops of colour cloak the younger son’s bedroom, appearing as bands on the wardrobe and a cartoon-esque city skyline on the wall. A black headboard diffuses the profusion of colour, while bird-inspired wall sconces illuminate the cartoonscape.
In the younger son’s bathroom, monochrome stripes, a square cobalt sink, and black and silver hardware compose a quirky aesthetic.
