Vadodara Houzz: A Multi-Generational Home Where Less Is More
This modern, minimalist home by Dipen Gada & Associates is all about maximising convenience and clever space use
Dipen Gada, Founder and Principal Designer of Dipen Gada & Associates, faced the challenge of designing a house that fulfilled the needs and comfort of a multigenerational family – where three generations lived together. Gada says, “The highlight of the project was the tight budget and the space at hand. We also had to meet all the requirements of the homeowners with zero compromises, while keeping the overall feel subtle.” Adhering to the brief, the architect focused on a decor scheme that blended style and functionality.
The dappled perforated screen or jali adds to the overall beauty of the white facade.

“One enters the house from the north-facing double door,” says Gada. It leads to an airy and open living room, “which reflects our signature style of exposed concrete ceiling with a panelled geometric pattern.”

Clean-lined furniture adds to the sense of expanse. Recessed lighting ensures sufficient illumination and gives continuity to the understated decor.
The open-plan layout integrates the dining area and the staircase. Wooden accents add warmth to the cool grey concrete.

“We decided to go with an open dining area because of the space constraint. The cantilever dining table hangs out from the wall and is complemented with a bench and three chairs for seating. This gives a sense of flexibility and enhances the spacious feel. A custom-designed pendant light illuminates the table,” says Gada.
On the left side of the entrance is the kitchen, which extends into an outdoor utility area. Partitioned by a wooden frame, the kitchen was designed on site. The shutters keep to the minimalist look with a PU finish (a two-component acrylic polyurethane paint).
An elegantly sleek, orange-hued staircase breaks the monotony of the colour palette used in the living area.
“It gives an energetic vibe to the whole space,” says Gada. “Light filters through the skylight onto the stairs and creates an interesting interplay of shadows.”

As one moves on to the first floor, the skylight and windows continue to naturally illuminate the zone.

In the landing area, a monochrome artwork gives character to the spot while being minimal. Green Kota flooring offsets the grey textured wall.
According to Gada, the staircase is the most interesting spot in the house. The monochrome prints along the stairway and the one below it (with a brilliant pop of colour) add to the visual drama.

“As per vastu guidelines, the master bedroom is in the south-west direction. Like the rest of the house, the decor is subtle and clean-lined,” says Gada. “The veneer-panelled headboard features capsule cutouts and reverse lighting. Right above the headboard is a window with openable perforated panels. It lets in the wind from the west and brings in the drama of light and shadow while ensuring solitude,” Gada says.
An accent wall with a row of framed art and the abundance of natural light lend a vibrant energy to the daughter’s bedroom. Handy and minimal furniture, such as the study table, reading chair and other pieces, give continuity to the decor scheme.
“Like all the other bedrooms in the house, the son’s bedroom also has simple and needful furniture, keeping the interiors low-maintenance and clutter-free. An artwork above the bed juxtaposes itself with the neutral hues of this room,” says Gada.
