Sarah Snook’s Block 2 Idea Book
The archway in this photo shows an example of a transition. Archways provide a great use in houses because it separates rooms from one another without having a solid wall. In this picture the arch provides a transition from the living room to the kitchen. Transition carries the eye through the design and gives the rooms a sense of unity.
Repetition is shown clearly in this hallway. As you look down this hallway you will see that there is matching rugs and lights. Repetition is when you repeat the same thing over and over. Repetition is used to shows what spaces go together. The repeating rugs and lights show that this hallway is continued throughout the space.
Asymmetrical balance is a big factor in this room. There are lots of different examples in this picture but the main one is the art on the sides of the tv. These pieces of art vary in shape, size, and color. The two sides of art are not symmetrical which gives it more of a non formal feel. Asymmetrical balance gives the design more variety which is shown greatly in this living room.
This dining room is a great example for proportion. That table is very large so it would look wrong if there were only 4 chairs at it. That would not be proportionate to the table. In this picture there are 10 chairs and they are a good size for the table. The table and chairs are proportional in this dining room.
The little kid’s room is a perfect example of scale. This room is perfectly scaled to fit with a little girl. The bed is smaller and the table and chairs are all meant for someone who is small. Adults would never be able to sit in the chairs or sleep in the bed because it is scaled towards a little human who is much smaller.
There are a lot of patterns in this room. Patterns mainly interact with color to determine the mood of the room. The pattern in this room is mixed with springy colors which makes it feel very happy and uplifting. Additionally pattern is such a cool type of design because it is so intricate and it brings depth to the room.
The focal point in this room is the clock. A focal point is meant to catch your eye and draw you to that part of the room. The clock does exactly that because it is so large. When you look at the clock in this bedroom it guides you through the rest of the room and also establishes the design of this bedroom.
