SYH: 2416 Ensuite Quarters
shower floor porcelain option that is white (with grout lines of course) vs. marbled. AS: I like this look just fine... but I worry about wear and tear with the grout lines especially on a shower floor. SY: yes, grout on a floor is trouble (or anywhere really), but you really must do something small (though you could get as big as 4x4) in order to slope to the drain. (You can do zero-threshold and extend a large tile into the shower floor, but it's more $$.) Mosaic is often the solution, if not a ceramic or acrylic tray base. They do have a grout that has a sealant in it, which helps.
Do we need an aesthetic inspiration direction for the bedroom (in addition to a suggested layout)? This is lovely and bright and ties nicely to the aesthetic direction of the bathroom. This is where I'm headed with layout. What flooring do you expect to have in bedroom and closets? AS - I like this layout, although I prefer ottomans to coffee tables and we like more midcentury modern furniture. We want to do carpet throughout the upstairs (besides bathrooms obviously)... probably a super neutral beige or possibly leaning towards a greyish beige. SY: got it. Also you can't have a 4 poster actually because of your short wall behind your bed. But I like the footboard/frame in relation to the sofa. Are you footboard people? The sofa may act like a footboard regardless, depending on the height of the bed. Anyway you have a California King, right? Which is long. All these details are important, but what I need to know is generally if you want me to design the furniture direction in the bedroom at all?
Simply Modern Gray from Stonepeak. Comes in 24x24 and 1x1 (for main floor and shower). AS: this feels too modern/ cement-like to me too. I prefer it to look more like natural stone (even though I do want porcelain). SY: these images are so hard to tell - I have the samples to show you when we present.
main floor crossville moonstruck AS: I like this one, particularly the shade on the bottom, second from the left. Obviously they might all look different in person, but I like the cool grey. SY: ok. I have the Gemini but not the Luna in my stash, but we could order the Luna. It's a lot lighter, obviously. I have some options set out from my samples that are very light gray.
marble, white and black - with a terrific warm vanity and rug. Love this as a scheme for you. Thoughts? AS: I do really like the overall vibe of this. I waffle back and forth between this type of light wood vs. white cabinets... which do you think is more timeless? Also, I am not a big fan of the modern layout of the wall tile (I prefer staggered) and while I really like the look of the penny round floor tiles...I foresee so much hassle with all those grout lines. SY: Wood vs white: both are timeless. I like the warmth of the wood and the contrast with this black. No worries about the wall tile and I agree about grout. SY: This is what I'm using for main inspiration image for you, noting larger main floor tile and staggered wall tile and less modern light fixtures.
another long vanity, no storage above, two mirrors and three sconces. thoughts? AS: I like the general layout, with no storage above and with the sconce placement beside and between two mirrors. SY: Got it, great.
I'd guess this is probably an 8' vanity. Nice layout. No storage above counter. Thoughts? AS: I like the three drawers in the middle of this one better than the previous picture. And again I like the no storage above and the two mirrors with sconces
you could also put a shallow storage unit at the far end of the vanity AS: I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to the shallow top storage if it was off to one side (I don’t like them in the middle) but I would need the rest of the vanity to be centered symmetrically to the remainder of the space, if that makes sense. I just wouldn’t want less counter space beside one sink than the other, I think it would irk me
this is an optin (but without the units at the ends) AS: I don’t like the top storage in the middle...it feels to broken up to me. And I prefer the cabinet depth below to be all the same
your vanity can be 8' wide. wondering about putting an extra storage unit (just a shallow one) between the sinks/mirrors. your thoughts? AS: I don’t like those on top in the middle
it might be ok to have the tub filler in back. aesthetically, that's my favorite option. AS: I’m totally fine having it behind or off in a back corner, just not in front. SY: check!
tub filler location. I'd love it in back in front of the window, but worried about reaching over. AS: I hate the tub filler in the front lol. I didn’t realize how much until I saw this. This one also seems very tall to me compared to the tub SY: ok! That's great, the imagery is doing its job! :)
one way to do a continuous ledge behind free standing tub next to shower. the ledge in the shower takes the place of the niches (or anyway, it can). this is an SYH project (better photography to come on this one lol) AS: I think I prefer a bench to the ledge. Plus I like the look of a freestanding bath faucet, as opposed to a built in one SY: got it
more typically how we would design your shower (not the niche location) AS: I think I like this shower layout the best... I also like that there is no back/half-wall behind the bench. I like how open it feels. SY: agree about the back/half wall!
not this bench, but your marble and layout - but this is a steam shower with glass all the way to the ceiling, which requires tiling and sloping the ceiling. AS: I do like this tile, but I'm not a fan of the modern stacking of the tile...I prefer the subway/brick layout with them staggered. Also, I don't think we want to go full steam shower. SY: check!
Your light, marbled scheme here but with a great rug and vanity color warming it up. (here the warmth comes from the rug and brass rather than wood)
marble and black fixtures usually need some warming up with wood elements. this is beautiful. AS: Yes, I do really like this. But the light fixtures feel a bit too modern to me. Since we only have 8' ceilings would these mirrors work? I also like the look of circular mirrors above each sink. SY: two circle mirrors are usually unfortunate. (whereas one, over a single sink, can be great). These mirrors are too high, yes, but the idea is good. And you can make the light fixtures more traditional.
again, the wood is warming up the marble and black contrast. this is a wonderful direction. AS: I'm not a fan of these cabinets. I like the color fine, but they're too modern feeling to me. I like the other wood vanities that you pinned, which have more of a traditional shaker style with recessed hinges. SY: perfect feedback, thank you.
a layout similar to yours but without bench and window :) This floor is obv black, too. This is an SYH client. See how the wood (which is also on the vanity) warms up the otherwise black and white scheme.
we don't want this scheme. too cold. needs wood to warm it up. AS: Is it possible to mix metals? I like the other glass enclosures better than this one...something feels very off to me about the floating bits of black everywhere in the shower... I don't know why my eye is focusing on that so much in this one. Also, I think the floor is actually darker than I'd want to go. SY: yes, mixing metals is no problem. This floor can go lighter for sure - but also there's no wood here so it's all very stark.
florida tile sequence current (porcelain) AS: Yes, I like this as a floor option, but in a staggered pattern probably...also I'm not sure if it would be too dark against white (like in the previous picture)
Happy Floors Paint Stone (porcelain) - Paint Stone is what we used in the Ensuite bath below, so that is out.
Stonepeak Zebrino Michangelo (porcelain)
I have a porcelain marble tile like this floor (next image). Thoughts on this? AS: I would like this herringbone tile around a fireplace or on a wall...but I don't like that many groutlines on a floor... and I am not a big fan of herringbone in larger format tiles (this is as large as I'd go with that pattern in tile). SY: ok!
Again, SYH project with a large format porcelain marble on floors and walls AS: I think these tiles have a bit too many linear streaks for me...makes them feel more modern than stone-like. SY: yep, I see that.
this is a porcelain marble tile - floor and walls - in an SYH project
similar to your set up. when you do a free standing tub, you want to consider where the faucet is. a ledge is a great solution.
SY: this is an SYH project - that herringbone is a porcelain with a marble effect. They also did a large format porcelain marble tile on the floor, and a tub like you like. :) AS: I like the herringbone tile used here
I don’t know what I don’t like about the execution of this...maybe the grout color and the bad side edge on the bench and the niche being so visible... but I like the general layout of this shower and tub. I like the glass enclosure with a bench half wall if possible. SY: ok. Hm. Grout color is good here, niche is a very reasonable location, side of the bench is tiled as it should be. Maybe because the bench is two levels? That bugs me a little.
Like this floor tile a lot. SY: check.
Like the tub and the large floor tiles. SY: I like that shade of floor too. You? AS: Yes, I like that it's not "white" but it's not dark at all either. I like the subtle contrast. SY: Agreed. Let's go for this but warm it up with wood.
Tub. SY: do you like: black vanity, floors? AS: No, I don't want black vanity or floors. SY: got it
Like this stone countertop
I also like tubs that are a bit more modern like this
Like this tub. SY: thumbs up. You prefer free standing then, to decked? AS: Yes, I want freestanding
Would like to be able to get a rain head plus a regular shower head, as long as water pressure isn’t an issue. SY: Should be fine.
Like this for shower walls and possible along exterior wall in bathroom... prefer 12x24 so there are fewer grout lines to clean than mosaics or even standard subway tiles. SY: less grout is a great idea indeed. But do you want marble? AS: No I actually much prefer porcelain that looks like stone (more durable, less headache sealing etc., plus usually more affordable too). SY: check
Like the idea of a little darker grey on flooring, so it’s not just a ton of white everywhere... but I don’t think I want to go black on floor. SY: ok. A darker floor does help conceal darker hair and dust as they accumulate, which is nice.
Like hex tile for shower floor. SY: yes. Note that marble is a natural and porous stone, that may etch if it encounters acid (lemon juice, vomit) and absorb things like hair dye and wine. There are porcelain options that look like marble that are more maintenance free. They can be more expensive, and not as beautiful as real marble.
Like this style sconce... but again prefer matte black. I don’t have a real preference between this general style in a light bar above a single large vanity mirror or several of these types of sconces alongside two framed vanity mirrors. SY: ok. We strongly suggest lighting at your eye level, which means sconces between mirrors or mounted on mirrors (or sometimes pendants)
Like this countertop style, but need it in quartz or granite (won’t do real marble anywhere). SY: ok, so all your images of marble mean you want the look of marble but not real marble? AS: Exactly
Like how light the veining is on this marble
Like the blend of modern and classic in this, but wish it came in matte black
I like most of this, but with matte black fixtures and no tile inlay on floor. SY: got it. That's straight-forward. :)
