After talking with the preservation director, we can most likely replace the 15-light entry with a more secure door, which I would strongly recommend. He did ask if we'd keep the sidelights, I think we could possibly get away with a single light at the top of sidelights like the oak door shown. Based on the style discussion we had, we would probably want to opt for these recessed panel doors with maybe the 6-light profile. I just need to write up a rationale with the window documentation as to why its being changed from the original. He sounded understanding of the safety issue in the area. I'd prefer a paint grade door painted a contrasting color to the house body.
gray wall paint/white trim
streamlined hood
elongated gray hex tiles
These are examples of the pop color I am thinking would be great on the front/back entrance doors. I'll search for something close that is produced by Kelly-Moore. Another option would be some kind of bright orange. It would also be worth considering a way to tie it into the interior of each apartment as well, like one wall, perhaps in the kitchen painted this color.
