Wall-mounted commodes have become a popular feature of Indian bathrooms because they float above the floor, which makes them and the floor easy to clean. Additionally, the flushing mechanism of this type of commode is concealed in the wall, which gives the bathroom a sleek, modern and more spacious look. A wall-mounted commode needs smooth and accurate installation to function well and look good.
1. Plumbing requirements
- The plumbing lines of the bathroom need to be aligned with the position of the concealed flush of the wall-mounted commode. Do note that a wall-mounted commode can only be installed in a new bathroom or in an old bathroom that is going through a full renovation so that new plumbing lines can be laid to reach it.
- A wall-mounted commode requires a 10-inch-thick wall to accommodate the concealed tank and flushing system. Therefore, an extra wall has to be constructed (at least up to the height of the concealed cistern) for installation of the wall-mounted commode.
- All the gaps between the masonry walls and the wall-mounted commode should be sealed properly with silicone sealants because these junctions are prone to water leakages.
2. Minimum dimensions
- The minimum width of a wall for installing the wall-mounted commode should ideally be at least 40 inches (3 feet 4 inches). For a compact bathroom, consider a width of at least 30 inches (2 feet 6 inches) on the wall for installing the commode.
- The wall-mounted commode offers the flexibility to be installed at any height that is convenient and comfortable to the user.
- The minimum clearance (free space) in front of the wall-mounted commode should be at least 30 inches. Standard Bathroom Dimensions That Ensure Efficiency & Comfort
3. Type of flush system
Wall-mounted commodes are available with either a single-flush or a dual-flush system.

- The single-flush cistern has a one-flush mechanism where the same amount of water is used to flush at all times.
- A dual-flush cistern has two flush mechanisms; it is considered to be environmentally friendly because it is highly effective in saving water. In this image the flush actuator plate (the device that controls water flow) has two buttons. One button is used for a half flush which uses 3 litres of water per flush and the other button is used for a full flush which uses 6 litres of water per flush.
4. Shape of the bowl
These commodes are available with an oval, rectangular or round bowl in shades of white or ivory.

- For a compact bathroom, it is advisable to go for a round bowl because it takes up less space.
- An oval (or rectangular) bowl is 6 inches longer, which makes for a more comfortable seat than a round bowl.
5. Warranty period
Make it a point to purchase the wall-mounted commode from a manufacturing brand that offers a good warranty period of at least 10 years. This is because wall-mounted commodes have some maintenance issues:

- Since a wall-mounted commode takes support only from the wall, the brackets become loose over time due to continuous usage and weight stress on the commode.
- The flushing system is concealed within the walls, which makes it difficult to access and it can be repaired by professional technicians only. Additionally, the spare parts for these commodes are very costly.
