Whenever possible, we add extra cabinets under the overhang on the back side to maximize storage
By sectioning off your kitchen into work zones, you’ll maximize efficiency in a larger space; more cooks, as well as their guests, will be better accommodated.
What Are the Key Elements of a Five-Zone Kitchen? 1. Cooking zone. The cooktop and oven. 2. Cleaning zone. Often allowing for a left-to-right movement. This takes the user from the dirty zone to the clean zone, moving from the trash and the sink to the dishwasher. 3. Consumables zone. Food storage, whether it’s the pantry or the refrigerator, as well as a place to unpack groceries that’s within reach of or a few steps from the cupboards and the refrigerator. 4. Non-consumables zone. Cooking and dining essentials, such as pots, pans and plates. 5. Preparation zone. If you’re designing a new kitchen, remember that the more countertop space the better. Aim for at least 4 feet of open, uninterrupted counter space in at least one area, and allow for at least 15 inches of space on either side of the sink.
In its grandest expression, the L-shaped kitchen has a large island, main sink on one wall, range on the other, and prep sink in the island. This creates at least two overlapping work triangles, allowing for multiple cooks to work at the same time. Guest seating at the island creates a "kitchen as theater" feel.
Perpendicular Extensions This kitchen places a picnic-style dining area right against the back of an island, creating a layout similar to the previous “bubble island.” This works if you have a lot more space next to the kitchen than in the kitchen itself and almost cheats the kitchen out into the rest of the room to make it look and feel a bit bigger.
Plan for each guest to have 24 to 30 inches of counter width. But be as generous as you realistically can.
If you use a rounded corner like this one, you can effectively get three directions of seats from just two sides of the island, for a dining experience that’s even closer to sitting at a regular table.
