Thank you for this article. What great homes and cooling methods to share! I spent many years in Cyprus, an island in the Mediterranean with hot dry climate. The retractable awnings and extended roof and walls past the room borders, are widely used methods of keeping spaces cooler in residential, as well as commercial structures (i.e. bars / restaurants). Another interesting fact is that for many decades now every house and business in Cyprus uses solar power to at least heat their water. Photovoltaics are also becoming more and more popular especially on new construction homes and commercial buildings.
