“Paint, with a peppering of a few other elements like wood, lighting and textures, is all I needed to metamorphose this home into a warm dwelling for two couples,” says Natasha Aggarwal of NaCL- Natasha Aggarwal | Creative Living. When they approached Aggarwal, the clients (two brothers and their wives) hoped to have a design that was stylish, chic and inclusive of their requirements, all within a tight budget and short timeline. “I knew from the beginning that a clean design was the way forward for this space, with a few contrasting elements added in to stand out within the simplicity of the design,” Aggarwal says.

Who lives here: Two brothers with their spouses
Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra
Year built: 2015
Size: 204 square metres (2200 square feet ); 2 bedrooms; 2 bathrooms; 1 lounge

The home opens to an azure living-cum-dining room, with two bedrooms and a den leading off from the dining space. “For their 3-BHK home, the clients wanted to keep the private spaces completely separate from the public ones, therefore the house has been intentionally divided into two distinct parts – one half for the personal spaces, which includes the bedrooms, and the other half that comprises the living and dining area, den and kitchen,” says Aggarwal.

The living room has a relaxed vibe, thanks to the white walls, custom sofas and the seamless wooden flooring. The coffee table was custom designed as a space-saving multipurpose unit.
“All furniture was made in-house. The single stand-out element of this home’s design is the paint. The dramatic blue colour on the ceiling was used to add a surprise element to the overall look of the room. The chandelier was customised in-house and made in our studio, and a stone-like material was used for wall panelling (next to the beige sofa chairs) in the living room, to add a textural feel to the space,” says Aggarwal.

The living room flows into the dining space, where the white walls, blue-painted ceiling and the wooden flooring create a visual continuity. “The ceiling cornices, the large painting, the sculptural dining table with tufted upholstered dining chairs and carved furniture legs, and a decorative pendant light break the monotony of the neutral walls and flooring,” Aggarwal says.
The den is an extension of the living and dining area, especially designed as a large, socialising spot for the couples and their friends. “The den is enhanced with tones of brown on the walls and furniture to give a relaxed, lounge-like ambience to the space,” says Aggarwal.

“The clients already owned the leather sofas and wished to retain them, thus setting the groundwork for the design of this space. The rugged look of the sofas was beautifully merged with the dark walls of the room,” Aggarwal says. The walls of this room are highlighted with painted MDF panels, customised with a classic wood-framed grid pattern.
This bedroom sports a light, soft palette. The windows allow ample light to stream in during the day, ensuring that the space looks airy and relaxed.

“The bedroom was designed around the bed specifically, as the clients loved this piece the moment they saw it. The slatted MDF panels behind the bed, the wooden flooring and the statement hanging lights enhance the design of this space,” says Aggarwal.
For this bathroom, the clients were keen to have a space that looked like one from a restaurant or bar with soft lighting and dark colours. “So we chose copper-toned tiles and 3D textures to give the bathroom a glam factor,” says Aggarwal. The large mirror not only creates the illusion of more space but also visually cuts down the dramatic impact of the extensively used copper tiles.
“This project is one of my favourites, as it required out-of-the-box solutions to everyday living. I was overwhelmed to see how something as simple and basic as colour could largely impact the overall design of a home,” Aggarwal says.
