Styles
In trying to pinpoint my Style I have read hundreds, if not thousands, of articles over the years. Lately I'm wondering if I should concentrate more on what i identify with instead of the definition of the style. This room is nice for several reasons: (1) it looks as if this were a standard room that had molding and window sills added (2) the use of various shades of white is calming (3) the wall and rug are slightly deeper in tone and (4) the dresser and window frames are very dark. As for the "style", I wouldn't be able to identify it. I just know that I like it (except for the molding around the ceiling.) This is Transitional, which pairs the appeal of traditional look with the clean silhouettes and understated color palette of contemporary style, avoiding the extremes of either style. This may be my "style", which I refine by putting my personal spin on it's interpretation.
Another dream idea is to have a room with a view and direct access to a somewhat private patio or deck. I should be able to catch the spirit of this space in my studio. Keep the windows undressed, with simple roller blinds to keep the heat out. The fence could be built up by adding an arbor, using hanging plants to block the view into the neighbor's kitchen. And, hopefully, I could take over some of the surrounding garden for some herbs and cut flowers.
Classic kitchens are timeless and flexible. This comes with other givens, such as neutral color palettes and simple, unfussy details. Classic kitchens are timeless yet fresh. This is a style that almost everyone feels comfortable in, even some the modernists among us. White kitchens define this style.
