this is classic Japanese design. It purposefully speeds and slows the walk through the garden. Notice the long sections - they are there to speed the pace. The square transition slows the pace because you have to take care in changing directions and while doing so it directs attention to the lantern.
Boulders with cement around them is nice but overall this would be a little more harsh than I like in general
I like these touches of wood because it softens the cement
