A Guide to Setting Up a Dressing Room
A dressing room is such a luxury. Regardless of the space available, a stylish and functional vanity space can be set up
My dream dressing room (and I guess yours too) is one that’s swankily designed and has enough space to conveniently store clothes, shoes and accessories. From glamorous mirrors and flattering lights to clever wardrobe hacks, here are tips for setting up a practical, well-organised dressing room that looks great.
Located beneath a sloped ceiling, this dressing room design makes use of an odd and otherwise redundant space. Its open shelves neatly display shoes. The sleek floor-to-ceiling mirror expands the visual space when not performing its primary function of reflecting its owner, and a couch adds to the sense of relaxing space.
Pack a punch with storage
One of the things we love about dressing rooms is that it holds all that we need to get ready – and that requires lots of storage. Ideally, it should include open and closed shelving units, stacking trays, drawers and so on, to neatly arrange essentials. Choose a closet design based on whether you prefer to hang garments or fold and stack them. A combination of both usually works, especially when our wardrobes comprise of both heavy traditional Indian and regular western wear. Take a cue from this dressing room that also has a transparent glass cabinet.

Tip: A hidden storage spot has been created behind the mirror. I love the idea of hanging necklaces to prevent them from getting tangled.
Bring in lots of light
Adequate lighting is imperative when getting ready so you can step out with your best face on. Distribute illumination across the room with spot lights or recessed reflectors (especially the mirrors) and some track lights in the closet. Of course, natural light is always great and instantly brightens the room, as is seen in the image.

Tip: You can hang a small chandelier to glam things up. The opulent glass chandelier adds a bit of theatre to this elegant dressing room.

Don’t forget the mirror…
No dressing room is complete without a mirror. It makes the rooms feel bigger by reflecting light and gives the illusion of more space. The broad gold-framed mirror becomes the focal point of this room and brings in subtle glamour.

…Or the seating
Be it an an ottoman, chair or bench, seating is a must-have in dressing rooms to strap on those high-heeled stilettos or tie the laces of your Oxfords. Pick one that suits the dressing room design, such as a bench for an elongated one or a stool for a square-shaped zone. This shoe-shaped chair brings in oodles of style and would evoke any fasionista’s envy.

Choose an accessible and convenient location for a dressing room – for instance, next to the bedroom or your bathroom. You can also convert a section of the bedroom or your walk-in wardrobe into a dedicated dressing area. Here, a standard walk-in wardrobe gets transformed into a dressing room by introducing a dresser and seating.
