Module 1 Assignment
Formal - symmetry, high frames and coffered ceilings lend this room a formal feel. The vertical lines of the door frames as well as the framing of the coffers lead the eyes up and give a solid sense of height. The table center pieces (Tree branches) repeat the element of symmetry and also balances the room by lending an organic shape. Similarly, the repeating motif of the wall paper is an organic shape of branches - it softens the strong, deep lines and formal shapes created by the coffers and the door frames and moulding. The warm tones of the upholstered chairs and wall paper warm up the space as well. The wall paper gives a feeling of luxury to the room, but is also friendly and whimsical. The upholstered chairs give the room much-needed softness, as do the curtains. The pattern on the end chairs replace the formality of a captain's chair often found at the helm of a table in a formal dining room. The fabric choice is playfully different from anything else in the room. The light fixture is luxurious and rectangular with echoes the coffers just above it. It heightens the sense of formality in the room. Dark floors ground the room, especially against the very white cabinetry visib...
Cozy / Intimate The shape of this room is the most striking feature of the room, and there's not much else in it to distract from the architecture and the view, framed by floor to ceiling windows. the bed is all that is needed to give the room its purpose. It's very much designed. the slanted line of the far wall evokes the romance of a cozy attic space, but the large window gives the small room light and feeling of space. The small square shape of the window (reminiscent of a dormer window), framed in white is a nice contrast the blond-wood walls and creates a nice focal point. The textures on the bed give the space a coziness, as does it's position as the only piece of furniture - its expansive by default and what's more cozy than an expansive bed. The lack of curtains, I feel, actually adds to the sense of intimacy, where curtains would usually make a room softer and cozier, it feels like they must be so isolated and protected that curtains are not needed.
Cozy - this airy room is cozy because it has a fire stove as a center. The textures chosen also add warmth, as do the many wood elements. While the floor-to ceiling built-ins do give the room height, the books create a pattern that is warm and inviting. This is also helped by the pattern of the shelving being broken up by irregular spacing. The stove flue and the floor-to-ceiling windows all give heights, which is grounded by long horizontal lines of the low furniture. The huge, textured area rug also helps. To give a relaxed vibe, the art is resting on ledges instead of hung formally on the walls. The pouf is round and squat. the emphasis on the wide open floor space reminds one of a play area, and also relaxes and cozies up the large, bright, room
Cozy - the horizontal lines that create a pattern on the ceiling gives the whole airy loft a warmer feel (though the wood is light, it's still rustic, as you can see the grain), as does the fire stove in the corner. The cowhide rug breaks up the straight lines and gives the stark floor texture. Another element of texture is the armchair, which exudes warmth, and rustic relaxedness. the hairpin legs and lines of the other furniture are very mid-century modern. This has been softened with the fabrics, but over all this is a more minimal approach to coziness. The fire does a lot of work toward making this space warm. the lofty windows are airy, but still relaxed due to the diagonal lines of the frames. the shape and color of the stove is a great juxtapostion to the ceiling and the stark white walls. It gives drama as well as warmth.
This is a better use of the deep burgundy color. simpler lines and a more neutral rug due to the contrasting color. The eye has areas to rest. The white headboard creates a restful space. The repetition of the tufting in the couch and headboard, pulls the look together. the straight lines of the furniture is also neat looking, while the patterns on the bedding and rug soften them a bit.
Same comment as before re: bathroom. In addition the round mirror plays with the stripes and the color: it reminds one of a porthole on a ship, which gives the whole thing a playful nautical-beach vibe/theme, very appropriate and fun for a bathroom. At the same time the materials chosen move this bathroom away from kitsch and cheapness.
Peaceful - This is s very successful room in my opinion. Even though I feel accent walls often read as an inability to commit to a color, it does work in this bedroom, almost as an extension of the headboard. The color is cool and somber which lends a sense of peace... and also works incredibly well with the art work showing the back of a person's head. I will assume the painting was the jumping off point for the colors in this room, which I often also don't like, but again, it works well here. The lighting in the room is sufficient to prevent a color like this from making a room seem closed in and small or dark. The simple bedding is crisp, which works well with the organic texture of the headboard. The undulating line of the headboard is a nice contrast to the window's lines, which give off an industrial, utilitarian vibe (like a loft). The deep recess of the window sill gives a further sense of space in what may be a small room (judging only by the proximity of the bed to the window, and also this project is labeled "apartment" and so I assume size constraints.) The lamp has more softening lines that are appropriate to a serene, peaceful sleeping space. A nice touch of glam come...
