Tour a Warm Modern Home Inspired by Family Bonds and Anime Film
Architect Clinton Cole had been watching a lot of Japanese animation films with his kids when a couple approached him for help renovating their home. Cole observed how much the couple, who work from home, loved spending time playing, studying and eating together with their children. “They have a very, very strong bond,” Cole says.
And that brought to mind the anime film My Neighbor Totoro. Its themes of family relationships, friendships and nature seemed to especially encapsulate the feeling the couple were going for in their home. Cole channeled that into a bright and open modern family home with an indoor-outdoor floor plan that encourages playful family togetherness.

Wow. Just wow. I love this from the swoop to the furniture, but especially the emphasis on family. Warm and modern is rare to see. Kudos!
Please let me know the designer of the pendant light above the dining table. THX
Really love this, so creative. the rounded area for dining breaks up angles and makes flow in and out of the kitchen so well.
That ceiling is incredible
I'm into anime and I'm also into this house ;-)
What would this construction build cost in US Dollars approximately?
Awesome. The roof, the clerestories, the circular elements, the well balanced materials and proportions - everything looks perfect to me.
LOVE 🤍 LOVE 🤍 LOVE
Stupendous! I love the mixture of straight lines and curves as well as the mixture of different textures. The round table as the hub of family life, embraced by the curved lines of the structure is a stroke of genius. An interesting house to say the least.
“Access to light, circulation and privacy are what keeps people long-term in their homes” Very interesting.
I’ll be thinking about this house and this architect for a long time to come, I imagine. Relaxed, intelligent and joyful!
Such an amazing house! Love it! Would really like to see more interviews like this one.
This is absolutely awesome in every way!!! From a lover of Studio Ghiblis' works this is really wonderful. So inspiring!.
What a creative feast for the senses in this functional family design! I hope the owners live here for years and welcome grandchildren into this space. Please do more of these livable custom home designs! Kudos from the U.S. and the state of Texas.
Fascinating home. Whenever I see the pocket doors that open up to outside, I always wonder how do they keep bugs, birds, etc from entering the home. We have a screened sunporch which allows us to enjoy the outdoors without the outdoors (bugs, birds, etc.) enjoying us.
This is probably one of my favorite houses I have seen. The thoughtfulness put into the positioning of the house, with the sun , shade, and natural lighting. Also I adore the repeating of the spherical shapes throughout, each space has a story , and purpose. Love the lightness, of the furniture & lighting; each its own unique artistic element. My favorite; the circular cut out in the kitchen & main living space. It is inviting, livable & warm it was. Loved the incorporating of concrete, wood, and natural materials, feels warm, and environmentally conscious . Sort of a combination of all my favorites, The Jetson's ( with the roof line, )the Hobbit, with the circles, and mid century modern flair. So unique & brilliant!!!! Thanks for the inspiration, and the fairy lights!
Such a stunning property and fun interview!
I love everything about this house. Brilliant design. Modern and warm and unique!
Anyone else curious about what the front of the house looks like? It's on the builder's website and is as cute as can be! "My Neighbor Totoro" happens to be my personal favorite Studio Ghibli movie. The home captures some of his whimsy. Love the clerestory windows and the living room cabinets. Oh, AND the fairy lights!!
