Houzz TV: Step Inside an Industrial-Chic Forever Home
Stacy Weiss and Will Carpenter created their forever home in an unconventional space: a 1920s commercial building that’s been a mechanic’s garage, a tile store and an artist’s studio. Weiss, owner of Weisshouse, a Pittsburgh resource for high-end vintage home goods, and Carpenter, a general contractor and owner of Carpenter Construction, became their own clients when they finally found this space. “We originally lived in a three-story house, then sold it and rented a loft [while looking for a building to repurpose]. We knew we wanted an industrial feeling with one-floor living,” Weiss says. Now, what was once a commercial building is reincarnated as a loft-inspired home.

Beautifully done redo.........wonderful use of space, color and style. LOVE IT
The rugs placed in these rooms are incredible, full of color and pattern. We’re a big fan of mixing and layering rugs, because it creates depth in a room
Absolutely stunning.
Beautiful space!
I love the shower. The shower would also work for families with little kids or dogs by using a plastic, portable tub that could then be filled by a separate hand held shower. All the water would be contained and the kids or dogs could be towel dried in the shower before entering the rest of the bathroom area. Hmmm... I have a hall bath too small for a good sized shower and tub. Maybe a large steam shower with the ability to use a plastic tub would work? Any other ideas of what to do with a 3X 8 ft area that now consists of a 3X4 shower and then has an empty area next to it?
Can you feel my envy & admiration seeping through the computer? What a great place; I'd move in without changing a thing. Love the bathroom vanity & the chairs in the entry hall particularly but all the furniture & art work is well chosen and interesting without being too 'look at me.' Favorite favorite photo is the view to the master suite/portrait gallery through the hanging doors and deer sculpture.
So far the most beautiful interior on Houzz for me. A very stylish redo; love every detail of it.
Gorgeous!
Very cool, edgy space. Clearly high-end too.
Incredible shower and wheelchair accessible too! Wonderful vision!
Not my cup of tea, but I love the fact that you can see their personality in every room. I also love seeing a home with lots of art work on the walls.
Great repurposing....really nice!
The kitchen lighting: now that is the be-all and end-all "statement" fixture for a kitchen island!! Try to top that, right? :)
Love the shower and all the artwork! Very nice loft.
Interesting. I like it when people repurpose items.
Stunning! I love every detail and the outdoor space is amazing. What a lovely home
Fabulous!
That is just a gorgeous living room. Congratulations on a great home.
Love the guest bathroom.
Nice!
I really liked this. I generally don't like modern or industrial, so I'm trying to figure out why this worked for me. Maybe it was the classic touches, the leather chairs and oriental rugs, combined with a lack of rust, peeling paint or brutally bare cement, which are often found in the industrial style.
Absolutely love this home... Beautifully done
what a great looking place. Very nice job.
Love!!
I especially love the series of 12 portraits in photo 11. Very striking.
Venus de Milo mirror! So choice :)
The entire home is a work of art. Beautifully and thoughtfully executed. I can't imagine these homeowners ever wanting to leave this amazing place.
Great job. Full of character. The only thing missing is .... The Garage !
Hi Stacy, I love your home. You might not remember me from the good, old days in Pittsburgh. Great job. You always had a vision and superb taste. Congratulations. Sigrid Morgenstern, Naples, Florida
I LOVE this house! I love that it's so interesting, beautiful and personal. Well done!
Love it all!
Stunning home! Artfully done!!
Wow! This is a Home-I esp like how they planned the shower stall for a time when they would not be able to climb in & out of a tub-this screams stability and love to me. People forget that a house is supposed to be forever-to grow and change within your needs. Love ur art & lighting-all intended to bring life into your space. Thanks for your vision-now I'm off to hang another piece of art in my dream home.
Beautiful and thoughtful home. I wonder about the 14 arm light fixture in the kitchen though. It was not shown turned on. LOL, good bet it shuts down the power grid on that side of town.
This is quite a grand space.... I really love those furnishing and decoration choices which seem completely and utterly idiosyncratic .... There is enough breathing room given to each space to let these choices shine. I think I see this most clearly in the lighting selections.
my favourites bits are
the shower enclosure
the custom shelving
the grid of portraits
The garden
I loved the master bedroom. That's about it.
I don't think it's accurate to call this industrial chic. Just stick with chic, because even the things I don't like still work. I love the way the shelves are fitted in the bookcase and the refrigerator handles in the bathroom. And the pile of rugs. And the apothecary cabinet. The things I don't love are chrome, the chandelier, the flat wall kitchen and the bathroom floor tile.
STUNNING! I love everything about it and would live there in a heartbeat! Superb work!
Absolutely outstanding house. Love it. Choice of materials , finishes, decor, furniture-everything. Just surprised with the size of the property for two people?
Just wow!
Industrial chic appears to have a close cousin - "Industrial Glam". Here's an Industrial Glam Kitchen. I'm not sure I have figured out the difference between Industrial Chic and Industrial Glam. Can anyone offer any insights?
I could say a lot about that. The lighting, art, and tables really spoke to me. What a great place!
Wow, there is NOTHING about this home that I don't LOVE! It's absolutely fabulous.
Where did you get the new windows for kitchen and master?
I'm speechless...fantastic and so creative! I can only imagine the conversation that is sparked by guests lucky enough to experience this one of a kind home.
A wonderful, highly personal home in which everything works - - congrats!
I admire those Dining room chairs. Are they custom made or an available brand?
An overwhelming task for most people, no doubt, but very well done by the Carpenter/Weiss team. I may not agree with some design elements used but I do admire the chutzpah and creativity when working with some difficult spaces. Kudos guys!
I'm an architect and rarely will comment, but this dynamic duo has such a fantastic "collective eye" I felt compelled to pass on the accolades!
IMO, 100% perfect, starting with their taste in art. We own Old Town Guesthouse B&B in Colorado Springs and would love to have some of their eye for design and reuse rub off on us when we make a move to update the inn's interiors. We're in the heart of Old Colorado City and know industrial chic would be a perfect complement to our neighborhood. Awesome!!!! Kudos to you both!!!!
Can you hear me clapping my hands... fabulous job! I absolutely love everything you've done and your art collection is wonderful. Clap, clap, clap.
Fa-bu-lous!
I love all the hanging pictures. The collection is both personal and eclectic but balances with all the furniture and placement. I have already seen two pieces from the website I want! Absolutely love it!
very creative. too much wall art for me. I need more eye space, minimalism.
I love this space..forward thinking with the shower being big enough to 'wheel' thru in their old age.
Fabulous. The home tells me this must be a very interesting couple.
Excellently done, Sir and Madam!
I love what you've done. Gorgeous job and beautiful home. Bravo to you! PS Your guest bathroom floor is very Escher-esque....so cool! xo
Beautiful home as love the mix of elements and though not my personal style, I feel they have done a wonderful job making all the spaces their own.
Love it! Beautiful use of space. I really love the way art, books and collections are displayed in a way that does not seem cluttered. Just great!!
Nice job. Cool boys department sign. Disappointed a couple interested in being stewards of the environment would not subdivide the space into two, three, or four units.
This is my idea of heaven....thanks for publishing this amazing project!
When I see lots of art tastefully displayed, I cannot help but have that feeling, someone interesting who lives life fully, lives here. I LOVE how there are so many stories just in the design of the home, not to mention it's many fantastic furnishings!
What is the dining table made of? Concrete? Source for it and the dining chairs. Love them!!
l realy enjoy it, thank u for sharing it.
Dumb question maybe... How do you get the window in the steam shower open? We had windows like that in school when I was a kid and you took a long pole and opened them with it, but I didn't see a pole or a switch of some sort to open it...
And glad you left the clerestory windows I think they have lovely light coming through them
I like most everything I see with one big exception , The statue of the headless animal ..... why ?
Guess what. Pittsburgh is awesome.
This is such a terrific home! So many, many unexpected elements, weird art, gorgeous "bones". It's a home where I could visit and never speak to anyone, just browse and ooh and aahhh to my hearts content, with the occasional chuckle thrown in. And I love the weird headless animal. Just another quirky object among many equally so.
Every view of this home, inside and out, took my breathe away with it's expressions of creativity, specificity to the inhabitants' taste, and high design intelligence combined with a wicked sense of humor. It's the kind of home where two bedrooms suffice for the needs of the owners, rather than the expected three for the sake of resale. I've a feeling this home will support metamorphoses as the owners move through their lives. Well done, you!
What a wonderful creative space! Congratulations on a job well done...and thanks for sharing!
This is an incredible place. Kudos to the owners!
My favorite house so far. Absolutely wonderful.
Great artwork. The kitchen lighting looks like a surgery theater - too creepy for my tastes.
<3
Headless deer bothers me ):
wow nice!! we are in the process of restoring and transforming a 1930's grange hall building into our new forever home…..and our first party will be a reception for our married daughter and I am sure we will be working up to the last day as well………enjoy yourselves!!!!
like the kitchen. I could not not bear the sensory overload of the wall art. love the idea of the conversion of the space.
And I adore the wall art and book shelves. Can't wait to copy yours!
Stunning! Just stunning!
Love the wall art! And the black metal window frames.
Yep moving in, bags all packed! Seriously love this house.....
Love the 70's platform shoes!
What a great space to grow old in. Bravo!
Excellent job all the way around! I especially love your art wall and floor.
Love every inch of this space.
Stunning! Love industrial chic! But too bad they didn't leave some of the brick walls exposed instead of covering them. If they wanted white, they could have painted the bricks white. It would have added wonderful texture and authenticity of the design.
Congratulations! It's a wonderful space. I am just a bit concerned about heating/cooling for such a large volume and with huge windows...
Stacy's store, Weisshouse, is my favorite furniture store in Pittsburgh. I bought my first solid piece of furniture there 17 years ago. (modern sofa and i still have it!) I'm not surprised at all that she has designed one of the most unique homes I've seen. Wonderful job!
Excellent little film- beautifully shot, framed and edited. A huge amount of information imparted with a lot of grace. Thanks houzz- for so seamlessly showing us this gem of a house.
Wow! I love it! Artistic, creativity, a lot of details, two people working together and doing great things, a good team! love the windows, the shower, the kitchen island, the patio outside, the ceiling....congratulations! you did a great job, I understand that you don't want to move from there, it is your small paradise!
Just fantastic!
Can't beat the ceilings. Love the black beams!
Wow, guys! I am not a minimalist. I loved the art. The space is so homey. Loved the headless deer, that is what makes it great.
Wow! Great place, the art, windows, everything is interesting. I'm more of a minimalist (no gallery walls e.g.) but I can appreciate this. It's so original & not "cookie cutter" decor. Guess I should break out of my rut & become more creative..
Incredible Space.
Fabulous house with so many personal details! It is truly a HOME, not just a house! Love every room.
OMG! A thousand ideas. Love the layout, the art wall and what a great idea for a kitchen island. Want to see it over and over again. Great production of this video!
Love your space - beautifully done. We are working on our space now - will take a few years, but hope it is as amazing. Your passion shows through on your life home
I usually don't take the time to write a review but I'm blown away by these brave couple to take a large raw space and make it their own. All the design ideas; textures, textiles, colors materials that was used brings this warehouse space a warm inviting home. Thanks for sharing!
Really inspiring! I love how there are very clean open spaces mixed with walls of art and texture. And love all the quirkiness amongst the beautifully crafted home with those gorgeous floors! The back patio and greenery are so great, too. Just the loveliest project - it would be my forever home if I lived there, too!
How do i save this to my fave Houzz folder, I want to keep watching it over and over!
OMG. Soo much to look at my eyes got a head ache. I love the barn doors, barbed wire piece and the white couch and chair. Other than that, where is the laundry and maid's quarters? I don't do a lot of cooking either, but I love to see functional kitchens. They did an awesome job in just 10 months, WOW.
After reading several posts asking about barn door hardware, I just ordered mine from Ebay. Check all the offers because they vary in price and style. My set for one door is very similar to the one in the photo and was $80 with free shipping. Now to find a door.
Your story is the one we all wish for! Beautifully built, artisticallly designed! bravo
Nice open place - love the art wall - interesting that there is a sculptural representation of Lenin in the collection.
When vision, creativity, and energy collide, THIS is the result! I love everything about this home, especially the low maintenance aspect. Job well done!
Oh, my, my, my. What a fabulous job you have done with this reno. I absolutely love that it is all on one floor. The entry sets the tone, and it only gets better from there.
The great room is so inviting. There are too many things that I like about it
that I will just leave it at that. The portrait wall in the master is
definitely smile worthy. It draws the eye to the comfortable seating below. I fancy
the shower in the master bath, but I especially love the vanity in the guest
bath. Well done – thanks for sharing.
What I love the most was the dialogue by the owners about creating their house and living spaces. It made the design come alive! The experience is similar to a waiter describing offerings from a menu that tantalize your taste buds. In particular I appreciated comments by the wife as to how she selected items that could cost $5 or $5,000 because it was all about appreciation of the design.
Ahhhh...never moving again:)) Says it all. Enjoy your home.
Absolutely wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
I really like the overall tone of the space and especially the kitchen and comfy bar stools and artwall concept. My only suggestion would have been to move the bookcase away from the artwall so it could "Pop" instead of looking a bit cluttered for my taste.
As for the person that asked about the difference in Industrial Chic and Glam I would say apparently it's the lighting. Bling = Glamour.
Nice! I love the blend of industrial and chic, beautiful, clean and warm, artful space.
Simply awesome! Not only is the space visually stunning, the homeowners description of their, as one other person pointed makes the space some alive. It is minimalistic with only the most strategic items used and positioned well in the home. I love it!
Lovelovelove it. So many clever creative ideas!!! Congratulations, jobs very well done!!!
I love the living room especially. Recently I have seen living rooms that are so stilted. Chairs that are parallel to each other. How could anyone be comfortable chatting with each other in that arrangement. (Do they hang their legs over the sides of the chairs to see their next door chair person?) This living room invites cozy comfort and Joy with all of its beautiful colors. It must have been a great deal of work and thought. Amazing!!
Great job! I live in a Chicago loft and I too believe you have to start with those things that you love and go from there!:) Thank you both for this story!
I am speechless. I had goosebumps watching this. I would choose a slightly different kitchen but apart from that I love every single detail. And I think what gave me all the feels is how rounded this home feels, absolutely everything is in sync - the design, structure, decoration and the owners.
I loved this space! We are empty nesters too and I would love to live in a home like yours....getting rid of all my clutter over 35 years to relocate to an open gorgeous space. Less is more!!!
Just my style!
Gorgeous space! Those windows and floors are the cats meow! Bravo :)
Gorgeous! Absolutely stunning.
Beautiful!
Perfect! Art, Light, Nature, New, Old, Modern, Antique, Industrial...it's all here in perfect harmony!
The floors, the ceiling, the windows, the shower, the (oh my aching heart) kitchen island! I love this home and I love that things that Stacy had to say about it...especially her un-snobby approach to decorating (not caring about the price of items but if they are loved or not.) Great little video. I wish I could live in this house, but I can't so I'm really glad that Stacy and Will can because their love for the place really shines through. (OH! and the portrait wall is killer!)
Absolutely drooling over this. Kudos to Stacy and Will on a stunning conversion. We particularly love the apothecary table-kitchen island. Ingenious!
I adore this place, top to bottom, my absolute favourite flooring like they have in old Parisian apartments, the artwork and the way its displayed, the black framed windows and shower enclosure. PS I wonder if they'd adopt me?
I love your home and I am envious.. I reside in western Washington state and old buildings are rare that are available to renovate.
Such a beautiful, inspiring and original space. Thanks for sharing.
Gorgeous. Happy for this couple.
Agree with others that although I don't usually personally like the mod style this space really works well. And in wondering why as someone else questioned above I think it's because as the owner said rather than picking pieces that are perceived to look cool she chooses pieces that mean something to her and the warmth comes with that. Hence the choice of mod and old that mixes well. I still always struggle personally with the omission of window coverings, although they did include in the bedroom space. I love the daylight open glass feel but am overwhelmed with the night exposure. It is so great to see a space with real individuality and not another cookie cutter version. Great job!
Dramatic simple living! Great Design...well done on so many levels. First video I have seen on houzz...great idea!
The floor plan design is amazing for downsizing! I love the no maintenance outdoor space and the open floor plan in the living area. Industrial style suits the house very well.
Magnificently designed space. Everything works and flows so nicely together in space. It makes you feel inviting and open to just enjoying yourself. Kudo's to this dynamic team for working so well together in creating such a beautiful and inviting environment. I definitely would enjoy living here. I am sure so many others will agree...
One of the questions I always ask a client during our initial consultation is, "Are we designing your forever home." Obviously, this is one of those instances. I love how this home has a story and through adaptive reuse, it has been repurposed into an incredible home. While it is an industrial space, the homeowners did an wonderful job of creating a cozy environment - where it could have gone the other direction. The use of the apothecary for the kitchen island is so smart. I find the juxtaposition of the new kitchen cabinetry with the antique piece to be stylistically sophisticated. This home has been carefully curated, and I certainly appreciate how each piece has a story about it.
Wow, what a tastefully, beautiful home. I just fell into the Modern Industrial look. Recently moved into a rental 3 bedroom home, 2 bath, but decorated in Hollywood Industrial, distressed wood, director's chairs, Kleg lights -- it kind of looks like a lived in film studio sound stage with a fireplace. I work in the film industry. I love the home displayed here, beautifully designed and well thought out. I hope they enjoy the remainder of their retirement days there forever. Very nice lay out.
Great space. I like the art wall and the clean lines kitchen.
I love this I could live here
Inspiring! Thanks for sharing.
I soooo love this space...but wow...the money you'd have to invest. It's very beautiful with such an amazing style.
Brilliant execution of electic look.
beautiful, bright, and a great use of space!
Exceptional! A space and a home true to the statement and meaning of design and craftsmanship.
I hope my home have that personal vibe and incredible style at some point. Beautiful. THAT ISLAND!
Great space. I especially loved the way they explained how they made each decision. Very helpful to watch!
Love it! The apothecary chest is fabulous!!!!
Love the personality and the art, the design reflects what you both love, really beaautiful!
exceptional....
Bravo. Bravo! Bravo!!!! How wonderful to live your dream. It is fabulous!
Aesthetically I think the place is great! The outdoor space is perfect! Having greenery and privacy out the window is almost more important to me than the interior. If it were to look out over drab buildings 90% of the effect would be gone.
I do find a couple of things to be form over function, however. What is the purpose of 30+ drawers under the kitchen island that you can't access without getting down on your knees? Even then the top row is rendered useless. Clearly, there is a need for the overhang, by why wasn't the cabinet turned around to make the drawers accessible? And making new wood floors into faux old floors? Too precious, especially when it takes so much labor and resources. What's wrong with letting them age with genuine wear? Who would require a 3,500 pound solid steel dining room table? That's just excess IMO. The chairs are just gorgeous; I'm sure Stacy could have come up with an equally attractive table...maybe steel but solid...no.
The artwork throughout is fabulous to see. Also so many works on paper! (Though I do wonder about those so close to the vent window of the steam shower surviving.) LOVE the Venus de Milo mirror in the guest bath! So many great choices. Black is my favorite accent color as it anchors rooms so well...as this design proves once again.
All in all, it's a beautiful job, though the cost even with a contractor and designer working for free must have been tremendous.
Simply - SUPERB!!!! And six years later it is still very relevant - true design.
Wow, so very COOL. I love, love, love your home!
Very cool. The work put into the renovation is doable. The big question is: How much are the property taxes and insurance?
Cities should be taking advantage of these abandoned building and homes instead of building these new ticky tacky clapboard sprawling cookie-cutter 'developments'. I could see a huge renaissance waiting to explode in America. This is the time.
I almost never like the homes on Houzz that are live-able and not multi-million dollar...but this one I am mad jealous over. While some of the esthetic choices (the cage shower stall, etc.) would not be mine, the overall design and industrial feel are just wonderful to me.
Stunning. Even the art is VERY industrial. This is breath-taking.
Wow! Love that you are in Pittsburgh too. Your backyard looks wonderful. Wish you had spent a little more time letting us see that as well. Looks like an awesome place to be - the whole house indoor and out. Hope that you savor every minute.

How about this gorgeous, industrial room? :)
Fabulous space that's obviously taken them years to curate all that stuff! (good stuff, but still stuff) The perfect industrial showcase. I can see why they never want to leave!
The best home ever.
who is the man or men in the twelve pictures gathered together on one wall?
It’s just touching. Classy yet homey!
.
Just stunning. Fantastic job with keeping it warm and welcoming as having quality pieces.
