Help with kitchen floor tiles

Having a contemporary style kitchen extension with large glass roof lantern. painted white kitchen cupboards and walls . Large 600 x 600 square Porcelain floor tiles in white with grey marble type vein. Unsure weather to go for gloss or Matt finish. Any advice would be appreciated looked up on pros v cons on both.

Hi Sarah, I think contrast usually adds a wow to any scheme. I think if your kitchen cabinet unit/doors are matt then go gloss on the floor tiles. I think if the cabinets are gloss then do a matt floor. Another consideration is how you want the room to feel. The polished gloss version will throw around more light and bounce off the surface. I recently had my very small bathroom re-tiled. We used the marble effect polished white/grey veined tiles. The light bouncing off everything feels so glamorous. Also when adding value to your home - adding space or adding light adds value.

Since everything in the room is white I don’t think you need to worry about light.
I agree that contrast is good and for that reason would put a colour on the walls to frame your white cabinets.
I think real marble is not glossy and a Matt finish on your tiles would probably look more expensive- having had glossy kitchen tiles and had to clean them I would never have them again.

Either one would work in the kitchen. I think it is more of a personal choice. I prefer tile in the kitchen.

Hi, I love the look of marbles as kitchen counter tops but am hesitant because of the problems with staining. There are lots of vitrifed glazed floor tiles which give beautiful marble look. Is it advisable to use them as kitchen counter tops? Since they come in 4x2 ft size, the number of joints will be less. Will they be chemically safe around food? Thanks in advance

if you kitchen is seperate and isn't attached to the living area then you have the liberty to choose tiles according to you kitchen decor or your liking or if not then you may choose something similar to the texture of marble and tiles are nice and does not requires any polishing on it.have a nice day

Creative Creaturz, 1- There is no such thing as a floor tiles trend that some one starts and everyone copies. Often designers choose their own pick based on design in mind and often the taste of the clients. If you can afford go with a professional for selection. Wholesellers don't have a lot of display and time you may want to go to other brand stores/galleries for varieties. Yes , you are right builder/contractors often choose uni colored tiles for convenience, lesser costs, standardised look and larger floor feel. Multi colored tiles look better in bigger areas unless your style is eclectic. Neutrals are always better to change themes. Gels with multiple designs. Bigger Tiles Merits, Looks cleaner and stylish, lesser grouts, much easier to clean. Demerits: Needs expert installation, costlier. Thanks, Nitin Cornerstone Designs, Bangalore.

Tend to agree with the first comment. If you are painting cupboards matt then a gloss finish could look great, especially with all of the light from the lantern. Also, size wise, they go well upward of 600x600 now, we have options up to 160x160, although the most popular size is 800x800 as the oversized slabs look great on larger floors.
