Need help for my living room

Hi
I have uploaded some pictures of my living room.
I have recently changed my center table and got rid of my red area rug. I now wanted to add a few accessories and a area rug but am not sure as to whether it will look good. I also wanted to add a few shelves and to convert the wall opposite the couch into a gallery wall.
Need suggestions please.

Looks a little cramped where the two chairs are. Could you move the shelving unit to the left side of the sofa?

I think a small rug the green (or teal) color of the girl's dress would look good. I like the idea of a gallery wall.

Leather sofas can really dominate the room and can give an overall cold feeling. I would add some earthy elements, like a wood coffee table with glass or metal. Go to Restoration Hardware's website and look at their sofa room scenes. And I'm sorry I think the art is too harsh for the room. That's all your eye goes to in the room. too overpowering. I would look for something softer or maybe a cool mirror and I would add color to the room with pillows and some colorful lamps. I also think woven blinds would look great. They add warmth and give a finished look. The color of your window treatments should contrast your wall color a bit, not match it or else it starts to look generic and blah.. You have warm walls, warm floors and the woven blinds, like Hunter Douglas brand would pull it all together for you.

No chipped stone what would be the purpose of that ? Get a nice T.V stand depending on your style ( we have no clue ) then mount the TV at proper viewing height which is the center of the screen at eyellevel when you are seated . I love the Besta system from Ikea but it is very contemporary so when deciding on stand make sur eit is low to allow proper TV placement

You have a very interesting space - the room itself has a very modern feel, but the furnishings feel eclectic and while different, each of your chairs are leather. If you do a gallery wall there, it will push you in a more eclectic direction (vs. more modern). I would recommend a jute or choir area rug in a natural tone either way. Some inspiration:

Gallery walls can be tough. To have it look not too random, you have to look at the sizes, colors, frames, and achieving a balance between all those elements.

I agree with houssaon...could you move the shelves to the other side of the sofa for the fish tank (the tank needs to sit on a larger piece) . Is that a very small table to the right of the sofa...would that work between the chairs to bring them closer together? Also agree that a rug with red or teal would bring out the colors in the art.

I dont mind shifting the shelf to the kids room but then the space there seems to look empty.
I have tried shifting the sofa chairs closer to each other. But there is very little space between sofa and chairs which again makes it look very crammed, so I placed the console between the chairs.
    Any suggestions.

Have you tried other layouts in this area before? I'm assuming that the curtained wall is a patio door to the outside. Do you use it much? And does the living room adjoin your dining area?

To me the console between the two chairs seems too tall. If people are sitting in the chairs they can't easily see each and converse. I'd move that console to one side of the sofa and get a low small table for between the chairs.

Maybe switch walls - put the sofa where the chairs are. Looks like you'd have more room to spread out the 2 chairs and console.

I think you have the makings of a great room. The first problem for me is that there are many individual pieces (furniture and artwork) and it looks a bit disjointed and cluttered. The second problem is that the walls and the tile floors are both very stark. I understand you got rid of a red rug and that's probably a good idea as red would be too loud for this space. But I would advise you get a new rug that covers the most of the living area - something neutral but with pattern - to ground the space. THEN see how the artwork and furniture look. I would also lower the paintings over the chairs and NOT put them on the sofa wall. This again would look too cluttered with several small pieces of furniture. Best of luck from Montreal!

Thanks Rosebud3 for the suggestions. I also felt that the console is a little too tall to be in between the chairs and seems inconvenient to talk to the other person. Without the console the space looks empty. :(
I tried switching the sofa and chair arrangement also but this visually blocks the space when entering the room (sofa is a little big). Please see one of the old photos I had taken of the room.

    Rebecca,
I think I will try placing the sofa on the wall opposite the curtain. Will post some pictures of this arrangement.
I had my eyes on the sisal rug in pottery barn or a large beige area rug and maybe top up with a small Persian rug under the centre table. Will this look better?
I agree with Rebecca. There's just too much going on in your room. Don't take this the wrong way but perhaps truly less is more is the appropriate design in this room. One nice, green and full plant is better than small little ones. As well, not against faux botanicals but these fake florals do not add anything to your room. You have interesting artwork but they're not being featured correctly, perhaps as someone here suggested, group your smaller artwork for visual impact. Best of luck!

It might be easier to empty the room out, except for the sofa and start from there. I see what you mean about the sofa blocking the entry when you placed it on the opposite wall, although I like the chairs in front of the window/glass door. Maybe keep the sofa where it is, put one chair facing it an angle in that window area and the other chair on the wall opposite the sofa? Either way, the console table is tall to be placed between the chairs and blocks anyone sitting in them from seeing each other other. I also think it might help to reduce the flower arrangements to just one and love the idea and look of a natural sisal or jute rug in the main area, possibly with a small Persian area rug or runner in the window/patio area. The artwork is great, it really warms up the room.

I think it would help to pick an accent color to help unify the room visually. Your main colors are neutrals so you might pick a color from the paintings you have such as teal blue.

Just read your question about sisal rug and small rug on top. I think this might just be adding more to an already busy room. I would recommend one large rug instead and while I like sisal not sure it won't just be washed out on the tile floor. You have the makings on an eclectic room happening - why not get an eclectic area rug?

Here are a couple of examples from Wayfair.com. Not sure if they're your thing but at least they would give life to the light tile floor and white walls and would ground the space nicely. Something to think about:)

If you prefer a beige/neutral rug, don't layer it. Just get one large rug.

    Hi all,
Many thanks to the I wonderful suggestions.
Will first try placing the big furniture now.
I now moved the couch on the other wall where the dining table was originally. Entrance to the apartment is on the left of the couch now. I will remove get rid of the light fitting above the couch after the other arrangement is done.
Moved the dining table opposite to the couch.
    Please see the attached images.
    Suggestions?

The arrangement with the sofa tucked in where the dining set was "looks" good. With out seeing how it is impacting the hall at its right side (where the chairs are) and the other entry way ... I need to see the space including each entry point
  • 11 years ago
    Thanks lessismoore!
The entry to my apartment is from the left side of the couch in the new arrangement. As you enter (after approx 150 coms) is the passage going towards the kitchen and the bedrooms.
I will try to attach a floor plan.

Have you ever thought about floating shelves? I think pairing a few floating shelves together would look great and would free up space in your living room. I really like the Eugene floating shelf from Bryght and I think it would compliment your existing pieces.

That sounds like a great plan! Consider a neutral-colored area rug to complement your new center table. For the gallery wall, mix artwork and personal photos in various frame sizes for visual interest. Shelves can hold decorative items or books to add depth and character.
