A 5 foot wide hallway is great! What finishes are you planning on using? Do you have more photos? We need more information about the style of the house, your budget and tastes etc.

I had a hall somewhat like yours in a condo in the city. It was the choice of lighting which made the difference. Instead of just one light run several down the hall.

I like how these pendants cast shadows on the plain white wall.

There are a few directions to go with color choices bit it depends on what you are going to do with your hallway, let me give you some suggestions. First of all is make sure your lighting is sufficient. You can go the direction of having it look like a gallery, with lighting that will throw spots onto the walls to focus on artwork or photos that you will hang on the walls, or you can divide the walls with a chair rail to have a color on the top half of the wall and a color on the bottom half. I created an app called Color911 which can give you color themes to choose from if you want to establish a color theme for the hallway. After you have decided whether you are painting the walls one color or two, and have lit the hallway accordingly, give some thought as to what you are hanging on the wall. If your artwork/photos will have the most color then you need to paint the walls a very light grey-beige. If you want colors on the wall and not in what you are hanging up... then I would suggest looking at the Color911 color themes to see what colors you like. You can choose colors to give the hallway some color to make a statement. I hope this helps!

can u show me some example for the chair rail..

Hi, I found a few examples of chair rails.,. of course these might not be your colors and some of the photos show what it looks like to put molding on the lower half of the wall which is an option too. Generally the chair rail molding is between 30 and 36 inches from the floor. You can see how it can totally change the room, and give you the opportunity to do a lighter color top to keep the hallway feeling open and the lower section can be a brighter color if your choice.

I agree with the lighting need -- if not fixtures, try 'sun tunnel' if you could access the roof thru the ceiling -- it's sky light of sort. As to the hally, if a wooden chair rail is not to your taste what about a gold chain, or the border from one of those gorgeous sari silks used as 'wall paper'..

If the hallway ends in a wall and there is room, you could place a small chest there with a mirror over it to reflect some light back into the hallway.

Hallways are a wonderful opportunity for art and great light fixtures. Family photos in different frames all painted the same color is a fun look too. I also love to use textured wall covering. You can get a little more daring with it since you don't need to coordinate with other furniture and fabrics. Because hallways typically show much more wear and tear, wall covering can be a more durable solution than a painted wall.

The ceiling could be painted a color as opposed to "ceiling white.” Choose a color that is in the wall covering and select a paint color that’s a shade lighter. Ceilings are also a great opportunity for molding!

This house is probably already done, but I think you should put a pattern on the floor, whether it's tile mosaic or inlaid in hardwood.
