Is chimney must for a kitchen?

Hi Everyone
Can you tell me if chimney is must for a kitchen ...i am having an open kitchen with 2 to 3 big windows... I feel I don't want a chimney i can keep the window open ...will it have any side effects to the kitchen If the chimney is not placed. Pls guide.

You seem to be an Indian and Keralite. for south Indian cooking it is better to have a chimney.

Effectiveness is influenced by capacity of unit. If you are trying to mount a 270 cfm fan more than 30" above cooktop, then it may make noise but will do little to clear the air. If it is 1000 cfm, then it can be higher than 30". So the answer is "it depends". Most people don't mount them more than 36" above the cooktop unless it is a really high powered unit.

My go to hood is Vent-a-Hood for all of my high end kitchens. They are quiet, highly efficient, and different technology than any that you suggested above as far as the filtering.

Until few years back chimneys were not used in Indian kitchens but suddenly we have them everywhere :) .. no it's not mandatory to have chimneys and it solely depends on cooking style, usage and kitchen setup.

Do share then layout and pics to discuss further...

Prathi, you can have the hob nearer to window and may be an exhaust fan.
