In this plan the island has been marked and should do good around 4.5*3 or lesser.

One change that may be considered is to move one of the fixed counter to the utility side wall. The open layout then will leave you with a bigger space for island.

It would depend on the other decor of the house but given a choice we would opt for an island kitchen.

What about a layout like this kitchen here? Doable for a kitchen of 12*7.8, you think?

Hi Ramyashree,

Kitchens are the spaces which require plenty of planning and storage options. They also have to be flexible with number of people using them - helpers and owners. You have a very interesting layout and multiple options can be planned based on your need. For your kitchen, I would recommend a breakfast counter adjacent to the open end of the counter facing the dining area.

1. The extended breakfast counter will act like a serving counter. When having your meals, you would want to immediately serve the warm food from the serving counter and not walk inside the kitchen. This is a good practice as you can serve your guests quicker and in a much organized manner. While your meals are on the serving counter, the kitchen is available for other activites like cleaning or preparing of additional meals.

2. Island counters are only helpful if you have a much bigger kitchen as it serves as a break between two platforms which are far apart. In your case, it will form a hinderance. 

3. The breakfast counter will also provide a visual break and designate the kitchen  space from other areas.

Hi Ramyashree, the layout you have shown is of same size , island kitchen is pretty possible over there.

Pls send layout (plan ) for this kitchen too. In image it is not very clear.

A wider 2 feet overhang breakfast countertop would give ample working space and storage cabinets below. You could move the counter between the dining and kitchen window so there is

1. a plain wall for design beside the counter
2. and plenty of natural light in the working area of the kitchen

If the utility door is moved towards the sink end,

1. sink tends to dry faster with air circulation
2. you can have more counter space of 1.5 feet wide till the end and cabinets below and above
   (or) have just a big tall pantry cabinet for storing - utensils/ blenders bottom shelves and groceries above
