Carpenter vs factory made edge banding

Is there a difference between edge banding done by carpenters vs. that which is done in factories? If Can interior designers get the shutters of wardrobes, other furniture (not asking about kitchen) get finished in factories, or it will be only carpenter made fully, even the edge banding? Do interior designers have such connections with modular factories? I am planning to give my house to an interior designer, but at the same time, I am leaning towards the factory finish of shutters, and most importantly the edge banding to be done by machines.

I am just a Vendor of Curtains and wallpapers as well as Modular Basic kitchen with SS Steel or MS stell Vendor,but in my case interior designer are giving 3D design of cabinet they create in Sketup and Revit after rendering they provide pictures where they highlight the area of Molding to Factory service according to them it was prepare.

The process of finishing the edge banding is majorly same in both approaches and small variations.

Loosely speaking, finish of an edge banding of a good factory would be better than hand work. However, note that not all factories are aliken and may have substandard finish.

Coming to the other part of your question, it depends on your interior designers expertise some prefer manual work while others will have factories. So pls ask your designer they will confirm.

hello, well firstly, is it possible to change the location of the TV unit? if so...the living room can be easily moved near the main entrance and the dining area can be near the balcony. if not, as you rightly suggested, the dining table can be placed near the main entrance. depending on the overall interior style of your residence many room separators are available in the market or can even be customised as per your preferences (eg. hanging or floor screens, beaded Curtains, water wall, book shelf, vertical garden, blinds, stained glass partitions, wine holder dividers, shoji screens, photo display partition...the possibilities are endless). you also create some funky wooden distressed partitions like louvred screens. hope this helps. cheers!

Plywood thickness for wardrobes

Hello there, So much of discussion for the thickness of plywood? It always comes down to load bearing and shear strength (MOE and MOR) which is ensured in thicker plywoods. Hence, 19mm is apt for wardrobes. Second, doors should be of 25mm bloackboard / 19mm plywood but edge banding must overlap between laminates to prevent peeling/warping. Hence edge banding must be >=25 mm. The carpenter's choice for going slim and saving will result in you being penny wise and pound foolish. Regards, Aurum Ideas and Spaces Bhubaneswar

yes it is. One way is as shown in this picture of the glass panelled shutter. We made the outer frame in 19mm board and finished with laminate and edge banding, then fixed the glass panel with clips behind this frame. I suppose you could do the same with say, 6 or 8mm ply for the recessed panel, but check with your carpenter. Otherwise, you can make a full sized flat panel in 19mm board, and on the front face, add a border of 6 mm ply to create the outer 'frame', and then laminate both. The 6mm depth will have to be finished in edge banding. That would be rather time-consuming, but can be done!

So i’m guessing you’re saying that oil paint/enamel paint looks cheap? That makes sense cause whilst i was growing up, the govt quarters came with oil painted doors and it chipped off in a few years in a sorry state. Don’t want that. So oil paint is out? What I’m gathering is that PU paint is not just paint. It’s a process? So you prime and paint(?) first and then do a protective coating of PU with the thinners and the additives? Am I getting this right? :P

Hi Koel, yes there is a difference in finishing of wardrobes done by carpenters at site & the one done at factories. Factories have better machinery for edge banding & thus also comes with a price tag. So factory made wardrobes have better finish, more durable & expensive. Just ensure to see the work (at least 2 yr old project to check the durability of their factory finish wardrobes) of person who provides such service as quality of plywood cant be ensured after it is sealed at edges in factory.

Regarding your second query whether designers have collaboration with such interiors workers depends upon designer to designer. Some may provide only design consultancy & may suggest you some interior contractor to do the execution while others may have their own team for execution. Just ensure to check with your designer about this service & insist on see the finish of work done by them. Hope this helps you.
