Hi. I'm not so great on these technicalities :-). I think the one in the picture uses wood, and placed vertically like that I think the slats would have much more strength than if they were flat. But I don't think even really hard woods would stand up to coconut pounding for long. Perhaps if you could find someone in your area that makes security gates like the one below, you would be able to source the slats they use through them (again, no doubt these slats are made from a variety of materials, you would have to find a tough kind).

Hello Chandni, Do you have a 3D view of the plan to use the wood. The suggestion on real wood material on external facade would depend on the likley placement. I am not sure if this project is over, But try zinc sheet it looks great and gives you an industrial look.
