Just change counter to white, keep the cabinets.

Get a counter depth fridge. It’s encroaching too much into space. If you have space elsewhere consider a separate freezer or cooler.

Light bright paint or flooring can help. I wouldn’t underestimate the impact of thoughtful lighting fixtures.

I’m definitely taking your advice to change the fridge. I was more focused on the different length (the up to the ceiling cabinets, the shorter fridge and the hanging fume hood), that I didn’t see the depth issue.

I’ll also be looking for some thoughtful lighting fixtures.

I wouldn't touch the cabinets either. A nice quartz, marble looking countertop on the range and the island would lighten up the space significantly. Decluttering the countertops and adding backsplash in light color should get you even closer to the look you want. I can't see the cabinet hardware, but replacing old hardware with new, modern looking knobs and pulls can also refresh the space.

Thank you for the advise. I was thinking of changing the cabinets but changing the countertops and adding lighting seems a more popular and affordable solution. Any ideas on the color of the hardware? Sliver?

From what I can see, your cabinets doors are flat panel, so more contemporary. I believe silver would look very nice on them. Some ideas below.

And, how about under cabinet LED lighting and a new window treatment

I would paint the cabinets off-white. It seems to be rather dark.

I would still like an island, just smaller. Maybe a free-standing unit on lockable wheels.
