I own the 1st floor of a 2-storied building. The ground floor being occupied by one of my close relative. We had been sharing the same entrance to the house till now. But due to some personal problems there has been a need to change the entrance to my house (i.e. the 1st floor). I have to construct a staircase in the front side towards the left side of the building. I am also planning to extend the existing drawing-room ( to the extreme left side of the building, as seen in the Photograph, attached) filling-up the open space, as seen in the photo. Please help me out to redesign the entrance and the extension of my Drawing room.

There are a number of factors that will dictate the design of your house. The first step is to visit the local building department to find out the restrictions for your lot. Do you need to set back the house from the property lines? Is there a maximum site coverage that the jurisdiction allows? For example, in San Clemente, California you can only cover 50% of your lot with your house. Do you need to include parking on your site? Most cities in the USA require 2 parking spaces on the site. The shape of the lot and the access to the lot as well as any potential views, and even the location of the sun and the prevailing winds will impact your design. Find out the information that I listed above and post it with a dimensioned site plan and you may get some great design suggestions. No sunken anything. Miserable to vacuum and place furniture and tripping hazard and soooo dated. There are lots of house plan books you can get in the magazine section of Barnes and noble. I would start there and then consult an architect when you are clearer on what you want.
