If you’re keeping the backsplash, I think you will need to go with a warm white. Check out Ben Moore’s warmer whites, they have some realy nice ones, one that looks like a very whiteish greige..I don’t know the number..it’s best to get large sample sheets and put them up to the cabinets and backsplash and even put some on the cabinets, then I would take an even lighter version and paint the walls with it. Paint your window trim and base trim with the cabinet color. It does take a while to get the color just right by trying different ones, but it is well worth it. It took me forever to get it right. I ended up changing my backsplash and flooring, so was able to go to a different white than I first envisioned. This is my before and after.

I agree with Sandra. Go with a white on your cabinets. There are whites with a hint of gray. However, going full gray would not work with your backsplash and would take away from your enjoyment of all the hard work you are about to put into painting them. Dunn Edwards has a 'white' called Snowflake DEW384 that has a hint of gray that may accomplish what you want.

There are good and not so good things you should be aware of before painting your cabinets.

Many people are able to brighten their kitchen and extend the life of their worn cabinets by painting. Your cabinets appear to be oak. Oak is not a paint grade wood because of the grain texture. This texture - not the color - will show through the paint. This bothers some, but not others. Wood also moves with changes in temp and humidity which can cause hairline cracks in the paint at the joints. Again, this bothers some and not others. Most factory painted cabinets are MDF or MDF combined with wood because this is more stable as to movement - less cracked paint.

A painted over previously finished surface is not as durable as a factory painted cabinet. Even the best DIY jobs I've seen show some wear in 3 years requiring touch ups. So be sure to keep track of what you used to do touch ups later. Keep in mind that pictures on home decor sites showing the freshly painted white kitchen are not showing the kitchen 3 to 5 years down the road. In general, white kitchens require more time dedicated to wiping down the cabinets. This information is not meant to discourage you, just give you information as to what to expect. As said before, a well done paint job can extend the life of older cabinets.

You have a warmed tone kitchen. Do not use a cool gray cabinet paint as it will not work well with your other surfaces. A warm gray - often reads more green or blue, could work. Gray is no longer as on trend as previously and new design pics are showing more wood kitchens again.

Your kitchen looks to be a very busy place, and probably gets a lot of use. You may not be very happy with painted cabinets, unless you keep a can of touch up paint in an easy to reach location. They look decent enough, if they were all scrubbed and cleaned, that maybe you might decide to keep them. If you do decide to paint them, then scrub them really well, sand them very well. Prime with a top quality sealing, and bonding primer, and use the proper paint for cabinets. It is a very long tedious project to do, but, it needs to be done properly, or you will have all chips and cracks and peeled paint in just a few months. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Unless you are going to change the lighting to a cooler color temp (to eliminate the yellow) you will have to work with the yellowness that the lighting causes. It could make any gray that you think works with the current tile, when viewed in other lighting, look very wrong in those lights.

If you go the white cab route, consider experimenting with painting the backsplash tiles especially since you hope to replace it “someday.” Doing that would definitely expand your color options in the kitchen.

Yes, updating the light it always an option too!

We recommend looking into changing your lighting/bulbs in your lights first. No matter what paint you do it's most likely going to look yellow if your backsplash already does. We also recommend going for under cabinet lighting as well.
