Here are a few suggestions that may prove helpful -
1] Replace the old false ceiling with a new one that is clean and sleek. If you are fond of woodwork, you may incorporate it in the ceiling. Do not opt for a complicated false ceiling design as it looks bulky and gaudy and kills the volume of a space.
2] For the TV unit, mount the TV on the wall and cover the wires via paneling and wallpaper. Go for a self textured wallpaper. Heavy patterns and bold prints are a big no no. You may retain the console below the TV. If you want to replace it, do so with an independently standing console - it makes the area look spacious.
3] The partition between your drawing and dining is quite bulky and eating a lot of space. Go for a delicate jali partition instead.
4] Have the sofa upholstery changed to something plain and neutral. You may go for chesterfield back or keep it simple. Throw in cushions to add colour.
5] Add roman blinds in place of the present curtains for a tidy look and also to cut out glare.
6] Do not curtain the door. It looks dated.
7] Give the diwan a new look by changing the covers of the bolsters as well as the bed sheet.
8] Add a rug to ground the furniture.
9] Select a colour theme and stick to it. Don't forget to add neutral colours to mute the look.

Comments (50)Susan, I find that people often make their coffee tables too low and too small. Measure the height of your sofa cushion and pick a coffee table that is a similar height. Also, in the layout you posted above the room would look better with a larger coffee table. Even as long as your sofa, or close to it. Comments (23)Hi Rahul Satija To answer your question, regarding which material to use for the outsides of your home Terracotta Brick - unless you have used bricks that are meant to be left exposed, ordinary bricks will take in a lot of water and leave the walls damp, and hence not a great idea. You could ofcourse cover it with a veneer of brick cladding but that is something we would not propose. Between wooden cladding and paint, it frankly depends completely on your budget. Wooden cladding looks extremely good but is quite pricey. Comments (9)Hello there, The slate claddings needs wall washer illumination. Please do that first. Place a wooden block above washing machine and cover it with wooden slats. This will double up as an iron board and a curio desk as well. Coming to the basin it is best to put a half pedestal over the niche and install a vanity mirror with storage for daily essentials. Since you have specifically mentioned low cost, will point out the major things that need to change.
A big reason it all looks cluttered is because things don't match each other. That dice table and the sofa dont match each other nor the divan. Stick to a set of colours or theme.
RnD has given you good suggestions already.
If you are going to keep the sofa - the cover on throw pillows don't match the print on the sofa. Anoth option is to do upholstry and change the colour. How about pink ? Here is an example:
If you want to stick to black its still fine, but when you add throw pillow, do ensure that not only do the colours match but the prints - they need to make sense too.
The coffee table doesn't look that nice. If you could use tinted glass it would have been better.
The wooden base of the divan is boring and doesn't match the other items.If not anything, atleast paint it.
The dice ottoman doesn't match the present sofa nor divan.
The show pieces - update them! Bring more interesting things.
The pink table near the sofa- again doesn't match anything.
change the sheets of the divan.
Change the tablecloth on the table near the partition.
These are some of the things. If you present choices we can try to help you choose but else its best to go for professional help. Hiring interior designers isn't just that they know to decorate well, they will be able ensure the space is planned for best productivity, the overall decor is pleasing to the family and also help adjust lighting requirements.
