Hi, I wish to create a setting like this in my Nagpur home's inner courtyard. What kind of materials can I used to cover the top? Will using glass insulate the space inside and make it hotter?

Our courtyard has a flower garden and a natural spring flowing underneath. I would like to build a small pond for fishes and also give a flowy look to it by using the spring as the water source and adding rocks to accessorise it. Please suggest what rocks can be used to bring a contrast look and how to prevent contamination of the water.

Sherin James your house should stray clear from openings near the pond area .You should look that the foundation are laid in good ration and planning for the pond. Make sure the pluumbing is done in full. to avoid any leakages. You can go for water plants too since its summer.

Answering your question is a bit tricky as what exactly constitutes an adequate amount of sunlight differs from person to person.

But to give you a general idea,

For primary living spaces that are connected to the courtyard, I would recommend a width to height ratio of anywhere between 0.6 to 1.0. For secondary spaces, a witch to height ratio of even 0.3 to .05 would be acceptable.

To make a grass cover, the first thing you will need to ensure if whether the structure of the half basement is capable to holding a green roof. The next would be to waterproof the top again, keeping in mind the soil and the constant contact with water.

Once these things are done, you need to locate were it is you want the lawn and ensure you have access to a drainage within or at best near it the area. You will then require the services of a horticulturist to help you set up the lawn.

What exactly do you require guidance in?

Our suggestion would be to have a maximum of openings towards the side of the courtyard, with the furniture arrangement oriented in that direction.

Also, having a lot of green within the open space always makes for a cozy setting on the inside.

Lastly, would advise you use the compound wall as an opportunity to make a feature wall which can become a backdrop to the spaces within the home.

If you are looking at loose furniture, you will need to invest in good quality outdoor products if you expect them to last well. Locally, you could look at Loomcraft. If looking at European you could consider Vondom or Paola Lenti.

If fixed seating is something you are ok with, then you can even make a bench type seating in civil work, and clad it in a stone. If cushioning is required you can place one each time you want.

I would not suggest you cover it in glass, it would become a hot box and become quite un-livible.

My first choice would be to keep it completely open, simply do not use it at certain times. If covering it is an absolute must, I would suggest one of two things, use either a retractable roof, with a fabric like cover, or have a trellis above which is engulfed in greens.
