hi.. the easiest way would be to shut it off with ply and hang a painting over it maybe or a cluster of pictures. In case you dont want to hang anything above the bed - you could panel up wall till shelf height in ply and maybe cut out some grooves on it and make it look like a panelling. The entire wall can be painted together in white. I think you could do away with the yellow. This would entail minimum repair work - no breakage. only making and fixing. hope this helps.
Just attaching some pictures to support my suggestions mentioned above for your reference..
you can close the shelves with ply and do a full ply panelling behind the bed like in this picture
or you could give the wall a fresh coat of paint and hang two huge paintings behind the bed as shown in the above picture. This would also add a feature to the room.
or you could border the shelves on 3 sides with wood - if you want to go rustic or fix ply and cover it with veneer or laminate - whatever you prefer. next you could remove the existing headboard.. probably chip the walls on either side by 2-3" so that the bed fits inside and finish the alcove with fabric/leather/leatherite - whatever you prefer. This would entail some chipping and plastering - so maybe this can be your last option unless you really like something like this and are open to doing this much work behind the concept - since you mentioned minimum repair work.
or you could shut off the shelves with ply and take an interesting wallpaper behind the bed - stripes, print, texture - anything.
or you could shut off the shelves, give the wall a fresh coat of paint and hang individual pictures on the wall.
