Are pillars in bathrooms out of date? Oct 2016

I live in Alberta, Canada. I've been advised that the pillars in our spa bathroom are outdated? Should we be renovating the bathroom? Please advise.

Just take out the pillars, easy job.
Paint the walls a lighter color to have more contrast with the tile.

Yes they are, but sometimes we are still asked to install them.
