Curtain color

Hi All,

i need to pick curtains for my family room but I have not painted the walls yet. Have an idea of what color I want but have not picked the exact shade. Should I go ahead and get curtains or should I wait to first paint my walls? Also, do curtains have to match the wall shade?

It's up to you. Paint our curtains take your pick. No curtains don't have to match the walls , for that matter I think they look better when they don't. If you post a picture of the room you'll get more response. Good luck.

The drapes don't necessarily have to be "matchy-matchy" with the wall but they should compliment one another. If you are concerned with the drapes looking outdated overtime or if you choose to change you paint colour in the future then I would suggest getting some neutral earth tones. Depending on the style you're looking for (ex. linen, silks, sheers, modern vs. traditional, etc.)

If you have a small living room go for white/ cream/ beige curtains to make it light and bright. If you have a large living room go for a darker shade like a mocha grey/ brown for curtains to make it warm and cozy.

I would suggest u to go with white sheer and light grey curtains only. If u want want to play with bright colours then it is safest if u add them in form of accessories or decors, reason one being the space is small n it’ll look more crowded then. It’s better if u avoid orange n yellow in this bedroom at least. If u can give a better picture of the accent wall colour here it would be better. Then u could go with a darker shade of it to form the colour scheme. White+Grey+Purplish brown. That’s it.

Namaste mitra, You could add a neutral colour like dusty pink which would be a mid colour joining the two adjacent wall colours to give it a wholesome feel.

I do love it when drapes compliment the rest of the room but no, they do not have to match the wall color. For instance--my living room is painted gray but I will be making sheer drapes from burgundy fabric since burgundy is my accent color and it looks great with gray.

your curtains should match the rest of your soft furnishings, couch, rug, pillows. although i love soft white sheers everywhere.
