Those rugs seem awfully light to hide pet debris. Pottery Barn has some nice, colorful indoor/outdoor kilim-type rugs that would look good with your sectional.

My vote is for 1. It is lighter than the other two and with having a dark couch I think a lighter rug would add a nicer contrast.

Have you considered a Flor type carpet square installation that are washable and can be replaced if damaged. Sounds like a pet lovers dream rug.

I used carpet squares for the upstairs bedroom in a vacation rental property. Great when guests upchuck too many red jello shots! I imagine very pet friendly too. Just switch out the damaged one with one from your supply of extra tiles.

I'm adding (edited original) this to let you know that I do need a 9 x 12. I'm also adding 2 photos of our low traffic dining room which is adjacent /open to the high traffic family room area with the red sectional. We have no walls between family TV room, kitchen and dining room. The seldom used dining room has a Pottery Barn rug (see close up photo). There is only 5'6" of hardwood floor between these 2 rugs. This is why I thought maybe it best I go with something neutral (but what do I know!) as not to clash with anything too bold. I thought maybe grey would also tie in the kitchen colors. I like the trunk coffee table because of the dark leather accents which could tie in with my husband's leather recliner he practically lives in. (not the best photos because we have lots of windows and lots of sun to shoot into)

I would use the same rug as you have in your dining room. Very pretty.

Something like these may work.

Just a thought - instead of having 2 rugs so near each other - what if you try the dr rug under the sectional, and go w/o a rug in the dining room.

Thanks all, I would consider your idea tgb1 except with 2 dogs, a cat and 4 small grandchildren I'm afraid the Pottery Barn rug wouldn't stay looking nice very long. For this area I didn't want to spend a lot so if I needed to replace it every year or two...no biggie.

HI -- You should never put a red rug under or with a red sofa ... it is too difficult to match reds and they end up clashing . Also I am getting so tired of the trellis patterned rugs -- they have been used too much now . Look for rugs that have the same color as the dog hair with some touches of greens or blues or even purples . There are also FLOR.com carpet tiles ( in Funky Fresh Basement photo above ) that are perfect for active families and there are many patterns and colors to choose from. Not a fan of that trunk for a coffee table -- too heavy and blocky looking . A round upholstered ottoman or pouf or a storage coffee table that has legs .

ok, I'm OFF the trellis patterns. What about the floral that Auntiequeen suggested? (photo )

Thank you BeverylyFlaDeziner but I don't think black would work with blonde fur unless I vacuumed twice a day (not).

You could use colors which are olive green, black, dark/light yellow, white or grey to start with. However, these colors should be used with a hue that compliments the red couch in the living area.

HI -- To make the choice easier and that would work beautifully with the red sofa and the gold dog is ... a neutral natural fiber rug and you can have the edges bound or banded . Maybe a wool that looks like sisal . Like the rugs that are at Restorationhardware.com . This would look wonderful and on trend and works great for a family with pets . It would be timeless .

I guess I didn't either HaveFun. I don't like the last one, too traditional (reminds me of something I'd see in my Great Grandma''s home). The first one is nice. Maybe I'm somewhere in the middle. I'm not a real abstract person either. The entire family area, kitchen and dining room has all been remodeled and very up to date with an Open floor plan. I guess this is my problem, not exactly knowing where my taste falls.

Am I going in the wrong direction trying to chose something that is similar colors to the Pottery Barn dining room rug? I see you're suggesting introducing another color...blue. I was concerned I have too many colors going.

Want something pet friendly and soft when my little grandkids play on the rug. Other than that my needs are quite simple. I'm loving the suggestions I'm getting.

i have awful allergies, 1 puppy, 3 kitties. i only put rugs down on my wood floors in the winter. I usually go to the wall to wall carpet and flooring store. You can normally get a large size rug, often bound for $50-$100. If it is too abused after a year or 2 you can give it to the animal shelter etc. or ditch it without guilt. Once children are older or you find a rug you like that goes with the puppy you can buy then. True they are not as fancy as the area rugs, but I have never found that to be a problem. everything else is colorful.

One tip, you said you wanted soft. do not go for the longer piles, i discovered the best way is take your palm and push as hard as you can, if the pile supports it, that is what feels soft. the rest just separate.

I think the red would overpower anything light colored. A rug with some medium to dark brown, a little bit of matching red and maybe some other colors would look good.

OK, what about this. On my laptop the colors seem to go perfect and the reviews indicate that the colors are exactly as shown (though of course everyone's screen may be different)

Petlover - the one you just showed may work. It seems to have comparable colors to your dining room rug, and the pattern looks like it will complement the dr rug, not fight with it...

nice rugs! Looked on the walmart website but unfortunately these don't come large enough. I've gotten such good ideas from ya'll and getting closer and closer deciding on a new rug.

Just a final photo showing the new 10 x 13 rug that arrived yesterday. It is working really well and the red in the rug works perfect with my new sectional. I love it, this photo doesn't do it justice...so much better in person. It is a much larger pattern than the small pattern photo shown on the website (posted in this thread).

I don't know, i always use behr, but most use other brands.

Check crate and barrel .. They have sale on rugs.. We shopped so much but nothing can beat crate and barrel patterns
