Our new kitchen

kelliegillespie

We remodeled our kitchen at the end of 2014 - it was taken down to the studs and the footprint modified. It came out beautiful. We designed and chose all the materials and worked with a phenomenal contractor - AM PM Remodeling who made it all possible. The old kitchen had honey maple cabinets and a small white tile counter top, very dated.

Hi, yes, we actually turned the cabinets into an island when they arrived but, I don't know if you can tell from the pictures, but my front room and kitchen are one big space and because I have a couch placed against the peninsula it was an awkward layout to have an island and still be able to have a couch.

It cost a lot! :) We took it down to the studs, replaced the ceiling, had two beams moved up into the ceiling and upgraded the cabinets to solid maple, everything soft close, Along with all the other details, leaded glass in upper cabinets, Shaw sink, Perrin and Row facet, roman shades, upholstered chairs, quartzsite counters, it seemed like everything we close was an upgrade! But worth it for sure!

The opening was there as well as the peninsula. I do have more pictures but when I originally posted this, I accidentally posted the same picture twice and then could not add anymore photos. I will do a new posting because I found a couple pictures of the old kitchen, thanks for asking.

Ah. . the backsplash, that was tricky because I knew I wanted something soft but wanted it to be a little different and stand out too. This is called French Clay and what I like about it is that it is hard to nail down the color because it changes with the light and I don't know if you can tell from the pictures but the edging is dark and brings out the flooring, which is a dark charcoal tile. I also like the oversized subway of 3" by 12" and the light gray grout. I remember wondering exactly how it was all going to look and being so happy when our contractors started putting it up:)

Gorgeous! You did such a beautiful job. The only recommendation I would have is to mount the Roman over the sink window higher. It will make the window appear taller and accentuate the woodwork and arch.

Thank you Christine, the shade is actually pulled down further than usual because when the photographer was taking pictures, it kept flashing in the glass. I really couldn't hang it much higher because of the trim work over the sink. When I pull it all the way open, the window is pretty big. Thanks for your comments, I love hearing from people!

Everyone praised you. You must have a swollen head.

Why didn't you make all three glass doors to the left of the window? Are they supposed to be symmetrical to the right side? I treat areas of cabinets as units. Similar to instruments in an orchestra - woodwinds together, percussion in another section. The one solid door and two glass is mixing materials in one unit.

Another pet peeve is a stainless dishwasher next to a farmhouse sink. They are fighting each other for attention. I know that stainless appliances are 'in', but they don't always fit the design. A paneled machine, in my view, would be a more cohesive look.

I write these comments for others 'to see with new eyes'.

The point is to see units and compositions within the space. And definitely the space as a whole. I don't know if all glass is better than all solid. But it is certainly one unit.

Why would a paneled dishwasher unbalance the space? I mentioned how it takes away from the attention the sink deserves. Or, is kitchen design, in general, all about how many 'in' products can be incorporated in one room?

For me, the better part of Houzz, is serious learning we might engage in.

I don't respond to be rude. My replies are meant to be poignant and if provocative, now we have a conversation.

Rosenhaus, not really seeing it. I think the dishwasher goes with the rest of the appliances. It could be white. For me, it does not distract. And the glass doors do not bother me either. I am move bothered by the plugs in the middle of the backsplash and not tucked up under the cabinets.

BUT, I think overall, I really like the kitchen. I could live in that kitchen. I could cook in that kitchen!

Your comment...."Everyone praised you. You must have a swollen head" however did bother me. If you want to make a critical comment, that is okay. Personal ones are not. As a professional, you should be able to know the difference.

Nice kitchen. Just some questions about peninsula design, on picture it looks like it going out of logical area of kitchen. I would expect island going parallel to refrigerator wall instead. Also overhead for siting doesn't look deep enough to be comfortable.
