Family rooms can vary in size, and the determining factor of a 'good size' would be how much space you an your family need to be able to fit furniture, and do activities in you all enjoy in.

The above family room looks to be about 12'-14' wide and at least 16'-18' deep. So a 12'x16' or 14'x18' family room would be a great size to fit the above furniture in.

Certainly with less furniture you could make it smaller or larger.
