Help me spruce up my entry

Most people come in the side door to our house which opens into the dining room. I have added this table but am looking for some more inspiration to make it feel more homely. (Currently, this area just becomes a dumping ground for papers etc)

Dear Carolyn, Thanks for your advice. Wood of 5mm thickness will be a good idea . It will help painting remain straight. I can slide it through a groove on wooden bars top and above. The wall I am describing is the one on left side as you enter. I love this painting as it depicts joy and celebration and you always get a smile when you look at it. Regards, Surendra

panjetty: I think the color a house should blend into the neighborhood homes. The exterior paint on a home should not stick out like a sore thumb. If a person lives in a San Francisco neighborhood where the houses are called painted ladies, you might paint your home purple and that purple would blend in for that particular neighborhood (photo below). Some neighborhoods (gated communities) dictate to the home owner what color house is acceptable, so the gated community neighborhoods always remain beautiful & cohesive. I do not disagree with you, but I always look around the neighborhood before I have my houses painted and I appreciate my neighbors who also look around the neighborhood and choose colors that blend in and do not "make a statement".

Need help to re-design the entrance to my house

I own the 1st floor of a 2-storied building. The ground floor being occupied by one of my close relative. We had been sharing the same entrance to the house till now. But due to some personal problems there has been a need to change the entrance to my house (i.e. the 1st floor). I have to construct a staircase in the front side towards the left side of the building. I am also planning to extend the existing drawing-room ( to the extreme left side of the building, as seen in the Photograph, attached) filling-up the open space, as seen in the photo. Please help me out to redesign the entrance and the extension of my Drawing room.

First move the chair that is sitting beside the sofa so that it faces the other chair, get a rug with some color or texture or both. Some art work on the walls a larger coffee table. Take the clock off the wall, mount the speakers and get rid of that thing under the T.V. and lower the T.V. so the center of the screen is at eye level when you are sitting. put a low cabinet below for any stuff you need. I will add more pics in next post.

What is opposite the door (i.e. what do guests see as soon as they walk into the house)? Is there a nice bright artwork there? A window that looks into the garden? In terms of the side table, I'd consider removing the small shelf (and big spray and fire extinguisher) and maybe putting a large mirror above the side table (especially if you also use that door as the main entry/exit to the house). If the side table becomes a dumping ground for papers, maybe buy a decorative box to sit on top of the side or dining table into which all papers go into during the week (and someone has to sort through them on the weekend in front of the TV). As suggested, maybe a bowl or dish for keys, phone and wallet (or whatever else tends to be dumped as soon as you walk through the door).
