W want to add some recessed light in our master bedroom. It is a fairly large room, around 16x22. I am not sure how many and where to place the lights. Any ideas, suggestions..? Any help is greatly
My office is slightly smaller 12x20. I have 4 cans on a grid in the four corners (roughly 30" out from the wall). With a desk lamp - I have plenty of light. Thinking about a ceiling fan and bed lamps. You should have way more light than you need for a bedroom. If possible switch the 2 cans along the wall (which are your pathway to the bath) on a separate switch and 3 way them to your bed and next to the bath. It sounds like the can above the bath door will work for the outside door as well. You can add a light to reach in closets ((We do a flat strip light mounted inside, over the closet door). Most fans have a handheld remote control. You can 3 way the 2 lights on the opposite wall to the door and bedside as well. With 9 ft ceilings- you won't have enough light for reading, but the table laps or wall mounted lamps will be useful there.
I have them in our master of similar size. Six to nine lights should be sufficient. I would have them spaced semetrically. You need to decide if you want a central light as well like a chandelier or ceiling fan. We don't have one and wish we did. Hope this helps.
Typically, we suggest pathway lighting in bedrooms- to get you from the door, to the bathroom or closet or bed and just enough to light up the 4 corners. I usually 3 way a switch at the bed to turn off the lights once you've gotten in bed. You can also 3 way lamps from the door which gives you more intimate light than ceiling cans or an overhead light. Depending on your ceiling height- cans may not be great to use as reading lights in bed. Think about wall mounted lamps for that. If you are undecided about a ceiling fan- have the electrician run a wire for it for the future and have the contractor block for it in the ceiling.
8-10 is advisable if you are not going to use a center lamp or lamps at your nightstands. Make sure you put them on dimmer switches!!!! Plot out where other lights will be in the bedroom and then light the path ways and doorways/entry ways. Always center one light above a doorway - such as the entry to your room, entry to the bathroom, etc. Also think about putting a set of ilghts on separate switches. It's such a pain if you have to turn them all on or off at the same time. Group them according to how you'll use them. I would not advise you to put recessed lights over the bed - they get in your eyes and are very annoying. Switches by the bed are a great suggestion from Chris. You can get better advice if you post a floor plan drawing of your bedroom.
I am trying to add a picture but for some reason I can't do that on my ipad. The room is rectangular, the door into theroom from the passage is on one side of the long side and the entry to the bathroom is on the other end of the same long side. Then there is a door leading to the balcony. Near the entry to bathroom.
So you are suggesting I have one light on entrance into room one in the entrance to bathroom? Should I get 4 more lights on the 4 corners? I don't want too many lights as I will leave a fan with light in the middle of the room. And lamps on the night stand.
