There are no set rules that you need a light fixture over the vanity area especially when you have enough task lighting. Personally I like the clean look of recessed light and they don't go out of style as quickly unlike some light fixtures.
In a bathroom, especially one that you stand at a mirror to fix hair or apply make-up, I like recessed cans and sconces on either side of a mirror or above mirror, above eye level. I have attached pictures of this layout. Sometimes recessed cans from above can cast shadows that can alter how you see yourself in a mirror. Having light from both directions helps this. Hope this helps. Charmean Neithart
thanks. We are redoing 3 smaller bathrooms (not the master) and were planning to add recessed lights. I don't have space for scones on the side. I could only use a fixture on top. See attached picture
My husband raised the question...do we need the additional overhead light? Our contractor is going to install with no extra charge but husband felt that that should not be the reason.
I see, my opinion is you can probably get away with just recessed cans in smaller bathrooms, but ideally you want light from above and in front. It might be best to just install it while you're still in the fixing up phase. Hope that helps. Charmean
Also have a question about the master. We will have double sinks about 4 feet apart on a long wall. Shall we put ..... 1. two framed mirrors with scones on each side (4 total) OR 2. one long mirror along the whole span with scones (2 total) OR 3. 2 framed mirrors with overhead above each mirror.
I want it to look modern and yet not break the bank. PS we already have recessed lights in the bathroom.
